    RAM Upgrade

I have an XPS 8930 I bought directly from Dell., Windows 10 Pro x64-based system with 64GB of RAM. i7-8700K@3.70GHz 3696Mhz. I would like to add addtional RAM According to Dell this computer is maxed out and will not support any additional RAM. Is this true? Can anyone explain why?

    Hi there
depends on the BIOS / Mobo --however if you really need more than 64GB RAM shouldn't you really be thinking of running a SERVER type of OS rather than an OS based on a single user.

I can't envisage a scenario where a single user would need > 64GB RAM even if running around 15 concurrent VM's !!!! -- On a 32GB system I can easily run around 15 sets of VM's so what on earth are you doing with all that extra RAM.

    Cheers

    Hi,
16gb slot max for a 4 slot board.

If you want more you'll need another mother board like asus/....... with no restrictions or max of 128gb is as much as I've ever read of mother board spec's.

The i7-8700K has 2 memory channels and only supports 2 DIMMs per channel. There aren't any consumer-level 32GB UDIMMs available yet and it's not clear to me whether the CPU will actually support them. So you are effectively limited to 64GB.

    Hi,
Yeah right one would have to have 8 slot board like most x99-x299 series have quad channel.

Depending on the chipset (300 series / socket 1151) your board may be limited to 64-gig max. Caveat.... some Z390 boards may "now" support up to 128gig "after" a BIOS update" Not so much for 370 boards though. See this here - Intel Z370 vs Z390 Chipset Comparison

Bottom line it depends on the chipset and whether a BIOS update allows for more than 64-gig.

    Hope this helps.

I wonder whether this is another hit-and-run post? Several good responses, but no indication that the OP has ever returned to read them.

Dell is correct. What are you using, that you believe that you need more RAM installed.
