NVMe vs SATA for M.2 SSD? Samsung 970 EVO

What kind of M.2 do I have? NVMe vs SATA? That is the question here!

Hi!

I have this notebook: Dell G3 5379

and want to get a fast SSD Drive. Will this one fit?

I'm unsure about NVMe support. I'm familiar with traditional 2.5" SATA drives and M.2 SATA drives. But never had an NVMe SSD drive.

So will this work? From the LOOKS it seems an NVMe compatible port on the motherboard, but I'm not sure. Can you tell?

From the specs, it seems it has PCIe SSD support. Does that mean this drive is a go?

The big question is, what is the card that is installed in that port now?

This webpage says it is NVMe compatible:

Also, since your are going to have the case open anyway, might want to look at filling that second SODIMM slot!

1 Your computer manual will probably have entries for your M.2 drive in two places and they might answer the question:
Ports & connectors, Internal and
Storage. The Storage entry probably also notes the interface type.

2 See what www.crucial.com says for your model as well.

3 As @NavyLCDR says, take the casing off your computer and see what your current M.2 card says on its label. If it does not directly answer the question then look for its specs on its maker's website or on Amazon.

According to the manual, there are two M.2 slots in there:
One in the upper right, housing the wifi card.

One in the bottom right, next to the battery as indicated by a red arrow on the picture.

Note this is just an illustration, I couldn't take a photo this good so I used one from a youtube video.

In my computer THAT slot is empty.

Manual says:

One M.2 slot for the 2230 Wi-Fi and Bluetooth combo card
• One M.2 slot for the 2280 solid-state drive (PCIe 3x4 NVMe)
