    Asus USB drivers

    Hi All,
    I just bought a USB 3.0 stick and noticed the transfer rate is not holding at it's peak. It goes up and down from 2-24.9MB. I tested a few of my 2.0 USB sticks and they seem to hold at their top rate or close to it. Not sure if it's the stick or the drivers. Maybe this is normal for some USB sticks. Hoping to get some answers here.
    My motherboard;
    ASUS Z270 TUF Mark 1
    Win 10 1809
    In device Manager under "Universal Serial Bus controllers are the following;
    ASMedia USB Root Hub
    ASMedia USB3.1 eXtensible Host Controller
    Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.0 (Microsoft)
    USB Composite Device
    USB Composite Device
    USB Mass Storage Device
    USB Root Hub (USB 3.0)

    Does it make any difference if the drivers are Microsoft or Asus drivers? Would it make any difference to the performance for stability of the transfer rate?
    If the ASUS USB drivers are better for my MB, where can I download those driver separately from the other ASUS drivers that are on the ASUS Support site. I can't seem to find them. Not sure if they are inside other utility drivers on the ASUS site.
    Greatly appreciate any replies

    What USB stick is it? Cheap USB 3.0 drives can certainly be slower than fast USB 2.0 drives - it's more dependent on the speed of the flash memory than the speed of the USB interface.

    I'm guessing that the ASMedia controller is only connected to the type-C and the green type-A port on the back panel. The other blue type-A ports should be connected to the Intel controller. Do you see any difference if you plug the drive into different ports?

    That's normal for USB sticks, speeds vary with a mix of file sizes. Also with exactly the same drive.
    I measure mine and have seen write variations of 4x just with same file sizes on the same USB 3.0 drives.
    20 MB/s is typical for a large file only scenario. Much slower for small files.

    You can update your drivers if you wish but it won't make any difference the limit is the controller/memory chips in the USB stick.
    Some of your USB ports are ASMedia, and some Intel provided by the chipset. Drivers are on the ASUS website. On my ASUS MOBO ASMedia USB drivers are under USB. Don't see them for yours, contact ASUS about that.

    Thanks for the replies. Yes the USB stick is a cheap one Kingston 32GB/Go DataTraveler 50 ...was on sale at Staples. I figured I would give it a try with hopes it will be better than 2.0 sticks. I tried it in the 3.1 port on back and also on the 3.0 front panel of the computer case. Same results, After doing a bit more testing with my Son's ADATA 3.0 32GB stick and it holds at 41-42MB steady. So gotta be the cheap stick . Oh well at least it is 2-3 times faster than all my USB 2.0 sticks. I will use it for transferring large movie files to the computer I have connected to the HDTV for viewing. I will invest in a better quality USB drive next time. Also I will contact ASUS to see if they can direct me to the USB drivers for my MB. If I find them I will put a link here to help others.
    Greatly appreciate your replies.

    The AsMedia driver updated my system without any errors Thanks again. Although it didn't make any difference with the file transfer, it still fluctuated as before. I can live with that with this USB stick.
    The replies here made me understand more about how it works.
    Thanks
