What is the reason behind for spinning hard drive failure?

Assume the hard drive is never dropped or crashed and always stable during working, what will usually be the reason for it to die at the end of day? Or just no reason? Which part of the electronics inside could deteriorate over time?

HDDs are mechanical. The heads are flying over the surface. Should they, for any reason (sudden power off perhaps?) hit the surface, damage is done. Mechanisms can fail.

HDDs are statistical - the 1's and 0's are not hard 1's and 0's but essentially based on probability. The surface can fail over time. They are made with a pool of spare clusters, and failing clusters are automatically replaced. But that pool can run out.. and faults begin to appear, evident in a surface scan.

And of course electronics can fail too.

    Search for
    Hard disk failure mechanisms

and you will find far more than you will ever get in an answer here.

And you can also get what seems to be a complete disk failure yet is actually a fault in its file management records. As the user that type of fault is just as catastrophic.

The only difference between this and a real/physical hardware fault is that you might be able to recover files from an HDD that is merely confused. This is, in fact, the only HDD failure I have ever had; I have never had an HDD actually fail physically.

There is no one reason, if thats what your asking. The short answer is they wear out from continous use. The motor fails, a bearing wears out, the list goes on.

Hi all, I have got a number of portable 2.5" hard drive. They are all 4TB purchased on Amazon, they are Seagate "Expansion", Seagate "Backup Plus", WD "Passport" etc...
I did not know what their names would actually make a difference, I think they are
the same so I always buy the one on sale. You know, Amazon price often varies.

Today I tested all these portable drives with CrystalDiskInfo and found that the Seagate
Expansion has the approximate temperature with the WD Passport, while surprisingly,
the Seagate Backup Plus has approx. 8-10 degree Celsius lower.

I look at the temperature shown on CrystalDiskInfo soon after they are connected.
Seagate Expansion and WD Passport usually has around 35 degree cel
while Seagate Backup Plus has 24-26 degree cel.

Does it imply that Seagate Backup Plus should probably last the longest and so the
next time I should stick to this model -- Backup Plus? (Because their prices are all
    around $100 on Amazon)

If the temperatures are within the specs laid down by the makers [and available on their websites] then there is no reason to conclude that any particular one of them will last the longest.

They will all fail one day. That's why you are wise to ask about backing up [in one of your other threads].

Backblaze Drive Stats: 2018 Hard Drive Failure Rates

Toshiba and Hitachi - although represented by a smaller number of drives- appear, on a superficial reading, to be more reliable. (I happen to use these!) (Hitachi drives now part of Western Digital).

Unfortunately many of the tests seem based on larger drives than some of us use.

I saw Toshiba 4tB portable is selling on Amazon at $100. How do you think about Toshiba
