    buying SSD ? any advice?

    Hello

My SSD, which is Trascend 128GB, bought only two years ago, but it just fails a few days ago. BIOS couldn't detect it. Plugging it to the external case of another computer, it doesn't read it too. Just like any computer doesn't find this drive.

    I believe it's failed. 99%, right?

The warranty is 3 years, I think SSD is always better in quality than HDD, why it fails so fast? It was never dropped and handled with care. It's practically always mounted to the PC for the past two years.

    Is Transcend a bad brand?
Which brand or model do you recommend?
I'm not very much into technologies. However, tomorrow is my holiday, I will want to shop for it.

Do I also need to check if the SDD is compatible with my motherboard or other hardware?
My motherboard is - ASUS H61M-K A cheap one I believe.

Based on your MB I would suggest Samsung or Crucial SSD SATA III type drive... right now the price has dropped so you should be able to find a 250GB or more for what you paid for the Transcend drive...

Two years old with a 3 year warranty? Are you going to attempt a warranty claim?

When SSDs fail, they often do so without warning. Ordinary hard drives are more likely to give you a little warning.

That motherboard is several years old. You'd probably need to look for a standard 2.5 inch form factor SATA SSD.

I assume you've confirmed that the Transcend won't work in any port on your motherboard and that changing cables doesn't help. If it didn't work on another PC, then most likely it is dead. That can happen by chance with any SSD and you just have t live with the possibility.

You need to decide what size you need. Current model 128 GB SSDs are getting harder to find due to their smallish size. The next step up is 240 or 250 or 256. You can get a good one for $50 to $80. I'd try to stick with Crucial or Samsung or Intel. You aren't likely to notice a speed difference in any of them in SATA form.

I'd pay attention to warranty and the retailer's policies about returns if you happen to have bad luck and have problems within the first month. After that, you'll probably have to deal with the manufacturer directly. I've heard some horror stories about that, but it's not a common occurrence with name brand SSDs.

SSD id definatly the way to go, you do not need to drop them to fail they are solid state therefore they have no moving parts, when I buy any thing electrical I always buy Samsung, I have got three SSD's and they are still going strong 2x1TB and one 250GB.

! of the 1TB is in a 5 year old Samsung laptop obviously I upgraded from a 500GB standard hard drive, plugged in and it found it straight away, I would never go back to a standard HDD. I have just bought a brand new HP Pavillion Laptop all singing all dancing, but guess what it has a 1TB hdd, when my warranty is up It will be replace straight away.

    Buying SSD

    Hi TSW88

I've just replaced my Samsung SSD with a Samsung 2.5 SSD Evo 860 500gb its very quick and use as my main drive using the HDD as an overflow if the SSD drive gets full, replaced from 250 gb EVO 850 and found that no migration product worked for me, so be warned, users say it works but it didn't for me.

I paid £66 in the UK ($87 US) but had to shop around, costs vary greatly more upward than downward.

Well dirt cheap is in the mind of the beholder (For me it would be $25 for 250gb). If I could find a Samsung EVO or PRO 250gb unit for under $50 I would go for it. They are close, but not today. Maybe some day.

I have a 250GB SSD from crucial from the days of Vista. It ran fine then, moved on to Windows 7 and now on the upgraded Windows 10. Still runs excellently. Once I year I use Crucial's Storage Executive to double check everything's alright and so far so good.
--- Whatever company you buy your SSD from, find out what software they have for your SSD stays in good shape and stays in well optimized condition.
