Windows 10 taskmanager not recognizing DDR4 memory ?

    Hello,

When i open the windows 10 taskmanager and switch to performance tab and choose memory it does display the correct amount of ram (32 GB) but without the memory type eg that should be 32GB DDR4 also the speed , used slots , form factor and reserved for hardware information is blank.

CPU-Z aswell as hwinfo64 do read and display all that information correctly. It's getting on my nerves did i discover a bug without realizing it ?.

The detection of memory hardware details is not simple and is prone to error. It requires advanced software and updates to be aware of newer hardware. Even dedicated hardware information utilities such as CPU-Z sometimes get it wrong.

Task Manager is not a dedicated hardware information utility. It provides this information as a bonus when it is able. It does not have the advanced detection software of these other utilities. Task Manager may be able to provide these details after some future update.

As to the hardware reserved memory: On a 64 bit OS this is usually very small, rarely more than a few dozen MB. With the display rounding in Task Manager it is often shown as zero and not worth reporting.

    Hello,

Well there is some progress seems like the memory information was hidden once i made the taskmanager window bigger by dragging the edges to the right boem there it is it still says 32GB instead of 32GB DDR4 one thing i could try is open my laptop and reseat the memory sticks but i have this feeling "don't try to fix something which is not broken" i'll listen to my feeling ....

As far as I know, Task Manager has never shown the details you're looking for. This is what I get on my primary desktop machine:

don't even bother, it's not the RAM that's broken, it seems to be a bug in Windows.

Yes it does, up at the top, like this...

...however, a quick survey of all my machines shows that only DDR2 and DDR3 show up there in Task Manager, on a machine with DDR4 I also just see the size of the RAM.

I never noticed that. But then, I can't remember when I last ran Win 10 on a DDR3 (or older) machine. (I only keep two desktops and one laptop active. The desktops are DDR4; I don't recall about the laptop.)

I may also not have noticed because I never cared. I usually know what sort of RAM my desktops have, 'cause I assembled them.

Not in the slightest - the only thing that does matter is that @rscalover now knows that this is expected behaviour with DDR4.

On investigation, it appears that the Win32_PhysicalMemory class does not have a Memory Type defined for DDR4, only DDR, DDR2 and DDR3. Hence the inability to report the presence of DDR4.
