Help Getting an Encrypted Hard drive to read

Hello I am new to Windows 10 and was pretty much forced to change over. I had a windows 7 laptop that I took into my local computer shop and when I got it back they had swapped out the 1TB Barracuda hard drive with a smaller one. they told me it was encrypted. I dont recall or even know how to encrypt it but I would like to try and access it and see if I can figure out the password. I have a 2.5 HDD enclosure that I have had around and this one fits the hard drive. when I plug it in to the laptop the hdd lights blue but there are no pop ups on the laptop installing and it never shows on my pc.

Like I said I am very new to 10 and have tried googling but nothing worked. the hard drive itself was less than 6 months old.

Im not sure if it matters but the old laptop was hp as well DV6000 entertainment pc windows 7 now i am using a windows 10 hp.

thank you in advance for the help and I look forward to learning windows 10

Hi EmDee8907. Welcome to the TenForums @EmDee8907

I'm likely not following your post but if a drive is encrypted they must give you the keys, (Password, passcode, PIN, whatever) to decode it. Trying to guess a code or to un-encrypt a drive that has been encrypted with modern techniques is locked.

Which drive is encrypted, your old 1TB they took out or the new smaller one?

Are you trying to get data off your old 1TB?

I'm only guessing but did you have to take your laptop in because you were infected with Ransomware? You would have received a message demanding $$$ to unlock. Did you take a picture of said screen?

If this was a ransomware attack we can get thread moved to the virus section. Someone may have or know of a tool to decrypt.

If you just want to use the 1TB for storage you could "Clean" it and then put it back in service?

I should have also asked does it show in disk management?

Right start, disk management, maybe all it needs is a drive letter. Right click in partition and Select option to change drive letter / path from context menu.

Hello thanks for the replies, I had taken my windows 7 laptop in and they told me that the hard drive had gotten encrypted and they said that they couldnt do anything so they had to put in a smaller one. they said that it was accessible and I could hook it up and use it like a passport.

I have the enclosure and hooked up the HDD to windows 10 and it will not read. It lights up but there are not pop up and it doesnt show under the my pc. I did find an article about disk management but it didnt show on there.

I never had ransomware on my old laptop, i had only taken it in because when I did a windows update and it restated to a blank background and the icons were not viewable unless in the large format. it only was suppose to have the software reloaded like before. I took it to my regular people and they wiped the entire laptop with nothing but a few files on it. I am trying to access the HDD to see what programs and personal files I have on there but it will not read.

    Strange.

So if i read correct the HDD was pulled and handed to you. They said you could use it like a passport (external drive).

Did the "Clean" it or reformat it to get it ready for you?

Back to the drive itself, when you open disk management there are two sections, the upper and lower. Your drive may not show in upper, go to the lower section and scroll down. If it still doesn't show try accessing on another computer.

Do you have another HDD that you could use in external to prove it is working?

they put it in a little bag when i picked up the laptop and I put it in the enclosure. I have the original laptop still so I will try and hook it up there.

im not sure what you mean by "clean " or reformat I was just told I can hook it up like I did with anothe HDD. I will report back once I try to hook it up to the original laptop and see what happens.

By clean I meant fully erased, eliminates all the partitions.

Strange you can't see this drive in disk management at all.
