That's idiotic. The PC shouldn't overheat regardless of what software you run, as long as you aren't overclocking. You are getting the run-around.
Reminds me of some Asus support I went 'round with a few months ago. The motherboard didn't read a DIMM in a couple of the slots. Their suggestion was to clean the slot with isopropanol. (I'm fairly sure that was off script.). The board was on its way back the next day.
Even build-it-yourself isn't without its risks.
