Cannot install some non W10 software updates - Permissions issue?

    Hi there -

I have a couple of Dell XPS systems running W10 Pro, x64.
When I try to update them with new applications or drivers downloaded from Dell's website, they fail.

For me, the way around this is to create a blank local user account, install/update then go back to my main user and undo the local account.

    What might be up here?
Then again, all other non-Dell software works just fine. Funny, eh?

Possible permissions issue or Dell's tricky (i.e. buggy) software? Their simplistic error logs are meaningless.

    Strange.

    TIA

Hi, as they are from Dell, you might be better asking on Dell's forum or contacting Dell support.
You can search there for issues with the particular programs.

    More generally:

Is there an error message? If so, what is it?

Does this problem vary depending on the install path you choose?

    Do you have UAC off?

What happens if you install them as admin?

Have you perhaps considered Controlled Folder Access?
    E.g.
Add Allow App through Controlled Folder Access context menu Windows 10 | Tutorials

If necessary, you could try correcting permissions using the appropriate repair using Tweaking.com's free cautious repair tool, but much better to identify what this problem relates to if possible.

    @ dalchina -

    1) No error messages logged by Windows in Event Viewer.
    2) Their install path is fixed in the installer.
    3) Did not try UAC off - good idea! Have to be a bit cautious.
    4) Elevated Admin privileges (or non-Admin) does not make a difference.
    5) Controlled Folder Access - good idea!

    Thanks for the pointers!

Hi, UAC- I was rather thinking that if UAC was off, that might be a problem. Obscurely, sometimes that's true.

In other circumstances I'd suggest a compatibility problem.

It is not unknown for the Dell installer to have a script bug. I had to wait 6 months for Dell to issue an updated installer before I could install the Dell Command | Power Manager. Clean installed in June, until the December re-issue the installer would fail on Pro but work in Home (needless to say, I had installed Pro).

Thanks. How is WD involved here?

    @dalchina -

Is there a way to reset all W10 permissions (globally) back to the default install state?

    Thanks again.

If Controlled Folder Access is blocking the install, then it is WD that is doing it. Controlled Folder Access is WD's 'ransomware protection' feature.

Very interesting. If I am running a different AV/FW, WD is supposed to be disabled. Unless some elements are not.

In my case UAC is active. Turning it off did not change anything. I'll keep that one for future use, lol.

As I understand it, WD has to be running for controlled folder access to be available. Looks like your install error lies elsewhere if you are running a different AV.

edit: some other AV have their own version odf ransomware protection, so it could still be the AV preventing the install.
