Can I change the drive letter on my Users drive?

My PC has Windows on drive C and the Users folder on drive E, which I achieved using an answer file during installation. I'm thinking of swapping some drives in and out of the system without reinstalling Windows and I'd like the result to be that the Users folder changes to D. (Specifically: I'd be cloning the current E drive to a new, larger SSD which would become the new E and removing the existing D and E drives completely).

I'm assuming that if I just use Disk Management to change the new E drive to D, then Windows will probably not like it, or might refuse to let it happen at all. Is this true? If so, then is there any way to change the drive letter, or am I better off just reinstalling from scratch (which I'm considering for other reasons anyway)?

    Thanks in advance.

You can change with no problems in disk managmet if the letter is in use you have to move it first

I would right click one of your libraries, say Documents, then properties and then the Location tab.

I assume the path is currently showing is E:

Moving stuff this way is piecemeal, which is why I used the answer file when I originally installed Windows. I'm not looking to move anything, just change the existing installation's drive letter.

Yeah, I'm aware of this and have done it many times. I've never done it for a drive holding the Users directory, though, and given the warnings Windows always gives you when changing a drive letter (something along the lines of "this may make some software stop working"), I have little faith that Windows won't be confused by the result.

I'm building a VM for the sake of testing this now. If it works there, then I'll give it a go on the real machine later, probably.

Well, that seems to have failed. It lets me change it, warns me about stuff not working, tells me that the drive is in use and therefore can't be changed immediately, and advises me to reboot. I reboot, and it fails to find the user profile. I assume that Windows stores the path as E:\Users, rather than by making any reference to the hardware underneath the letter, and isn't smart enough to change anything when the drive letter changes, so everything breaks.

I'll have a play, see if there's anything I can do, but I suspect it means I'll need to reinstall Windows or just live with the drive letter as-is.
