Have you checked with HP for the latest driver.Sometimes uninstall and reinstalling the driver can fix the problem.

I'm afraid HP stopped updating the 5P drivers years ago, although the same old drivers are available if you dig deeply enough in HP's support pages.

It is more about the condition of the installed driver,not necessarily the age.A simple uninstall/reinstall often works.

I do not quite understand the problem or procedure with prn files, but I see on the HP site a driver exe file for the cleaning utility. Does it not do the job?

As I recall the HP LaserJet 6 and 5 from years ago they used the 25-pin cable [Parallel Port, LPT] and the .prn was better associated with that. Haven't seen that port on a computer in several years. If using a USB adapter to get that port could be an issue.

The root of the problem was Windows 10 not being cooperative in sending a binary .PRN file directly to a printer connected directly to my computer via a USB to Centronics adapter cable which works a treat in every other printing task. Also, it wasn't possible to get a Windows 3.1/Windows 95 executable to run with any compatibility settings.
But I found another user that had experience with using older software and files with Windows 10 via persistent searching.
