Your reply is much appreciated!
I'd much rather use an inbuilt backup feature from inside Windows 10 and I was hoping I didn't need to use a 3rd party app like Macrium... Is Macrium available on the Windows Store? I'm just not comfortable with handing over access to all of my files to a 3rd party app...
MS actually recommended seeking a 3rd party solution in place of Win 7 Backup and Restore.
MS simply does not do disk imaging as such.
All the data handled by Macrium is yours.
The built in W10 backup apps tend to be a bit hit and miss on the reliability front.
Macrium is generally considered rock solid by users of this board.
I've used both but never had to restore W10's built in file backups et al in anger, so I wouldn't like to be wholly dependent on it...
The advice about backing up your drive to another one is well founded. If you lose your current drive to a mechanical failure without a backup you are pretty much stuffed.
I recently suffered a complete drive failure (SSD), but because I had a bootable HDD backup (clone) then I was back up and running inside two minutes.
You could back all your document/data files up to a cloud service like OneDrive, which will give you some 'off site' redundancy, but a full drive backup via Macrium is still a very good (essential...) idea in addition to that.
Only you can answer this one.
Did dropping the phone on the HDD definitely cause it to make this strange noise or is it possible dropping the phone simply alerted you that you might have done something and in fact simply made you aware of the noise that was perhaps already present.
If you are certain its the former then there is little doubt that you have caused something untoward to happen, if the later... which is probably the most likely scenario, then there is nothing to fret over.
Like you, I would rather use a built-in MS feature and have struggled for years to make the MS 'create a system image' work reliably. I probably have more experience (and success) using it than many others here on these boards. However, Microsoft specifically advised us a year and a half ago to stop using it and declared it to be a deprecated feature.

The final straw for me was when MS broke it completely for the 32-bit version of 1803. This was never fixed for 1803, though it does work again in 1809.

I now use Macrium Reflect Free exclusively and have found it to be totally reliable.
And just to confirm......you download and install Macrium Reflect locally then make and keep your image(s) locally. At no time do you need to share anything with Macrium. Even if they asked for an email address, which as I recall they do not, you could give a false one!
Macrium do ask for an email address and contact details but you can just ignore it and click on through leaving everything blank.
Most of the free app stuff is the same these days. Probably to remain GDPR compliant.
