Drive LG WH10LS30 not recognizing BD. Any fix?

This LG WH10LS30 is an old BD reader and burner I purchased in 2011.

I had Windows 7 and it worked fine every of the few times I used it, mostly to rip some BD or DVD content. I even tested the LightScribe stuff once and all was right.

Originally, it had the software mentioned in the above linked review. I upgraded to Windows 8/8.1 and can't remember now if there was any problem. But I remember for sure that with Windows 7 it had an ODD thing on the system tray which I could use to check for firmware updates.

Well, enter Windows 10 and all that was gone. Now the driver detects and plays DVD discs only, no Blu-ray.

I now have CyberLink PowerDVD 17 installed but it also can't recognize Blu-ray discs. It just says there's no disc in the drive. It works OK with DVD discs.

I've searched and tried every solution I found TNA. LG's sites (international and Brazilian) are useless. And since it's an old piece of hardware I have no hope as to send it to a service center for repair.

So I ask you if there is a way I can make this drive read BD discs again. I mean, some software or driver or anything that can replace the LG stuff, just like some Windows generic drivers sometimes take over and make things work.

    TIA.

A BD drive has 3 lasers to read different media: a near IR (780 nm) laser for CDs, a visible red (650 nm) laser for DVDs, and a violet laser (405 nm) for BDs. At a guess, the 405 nm laser has failed.

I don't know how to diagnose that.

Optical drives use the native Windows storage drivers by default. There is no specific LG driver for this type of hardware, but there probably is one for the motherboard chipset (e.g. Intel) whose proper functioning is crucial to all connected peripherals including storage devices. Would check that it is up to date.

Player software like CyberLink will not enable the drive to detect a disc in the tray if it doesn't already do so. This is inherent to the drive and the firmware; the software is necessary to decrypt the copy protected files and display the content.

If your description above was all on the same physical PC (i.e. progressive update from win7 to 8 to 10) it is possible that an outdated win7 upperfilters driver from a previous media player program is still being loaded which is interfering with the optical drive. There are a great many articles about this on the web; this is an example (ignore the title and the stated problem, the procedure is the same):

Pioneer BluRay not recognized by Windows 10 - Microsoft Community

One additiional thing you might try, is to go to the Windows Device Manager and delete the drive from the listing and then reboot. It will reinstall the hardware, perhaps to good effect.

Would any of this apply if the drive worked OK with DVDs, as claimed by the OP? (Not a rhetorical question.)

No idea. These are generic ODD troubleshooting strategies which often work.

It is certainly possible that the BD laser diode has crapped out, but the timing is odd. This type of troubleshooting costs nothing.

Most likely it has met its maker. Eight years is a long time for a BD drive. They are faster and cheaper these days. Replace it and use the other one as a doorstop.

Much more likely is the optics are dirty, particularly after that amount of time. That would affect Blu Ray, DVD, CD in that order just because of the optical spot size, smallest first.

Cleaning the optics depends on the type of drive.
The Desktop type of drive like that is difficult as it needs to be disassembled. The Slimline Laptop drives have the optics coming out on the disc tray thus are easy to examine and clean.

I really would not waste your time, buy a new one.

    Drivers are generic.

That is my best guess as to the problem.

I followed the steps here but found no UpperFilters and LowerFilters values:

Drive LG WH10LS30 not recognizing BD. Any fix?-regsht01.png

I had already tried the deletion of IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and of the drive itself via Device Manager TNA.

Well, I guess it is dirt or something previously said here. Gonna see if I can clean it in a local LG service. And start searching for a new one.

Cleaning the lens under direct vision is not, technically, a very difficult task.

Typically the drive mechanism is enclosed in an aluminum clamshell shield which is held together by 4 very obvious screws.

If you eject the drawer prior to disconnecting power, it makes the only other impediment (front bezel and drawer) get out of the way for you ahead of time. At that point, removing the top of the metal clamshell will expose the laser pickup for inspection or cleaning.

Otherwise ... OEM internal BD drives typically go for about US$60, your local prices may vary.
