    Cannot resize my OS partition

This is a spin-off from thread
Missing Recovery partions - is that a problem? - Windows 10 Forums

I'm trying to shrink the OS partition on my Disk 0 to make room for another (small) partition but am having no luck. Disk Manager shows there is 0 shrink space.

MiniTool Partition Wizard seems to work and reports no error (that I can find) but after reboot, the OS partition has not changed. size. I've tried with both leaving unallocated space and with creating a new partition following the OS partition. Same result - no change in size.

I'm not sure what to do next.

After you enter the new desired size for the partition and click apply, minitool should say you need to reboot the computer to complete the action. Let it reboot the computer and watch the screen. Do not press any keys, just let it go.

Knowing what you are trying to accomplish, though, from your other thread, you do not need to resize your Windows partition.

I had no experience with Partition Wizard until today so I certainly might be using it incorrectly, but both time I tried it I got the same results. I did the requested restart and spent some time grinding away the the percentage of resizing increasing. It eventually rebooted again with no report of error. However, Disk management showed no change in the size of the OS partition. This happened both when I specified nothing to follow the OS partition (so I assume it would have been unallocated) and when I specified a new NTFS partition to be created following the OS partition.

I know you said that I don't need to convert from MBR to GPT in order to use UEFI so I should not need the partition space required by MBR2GPT. But I've read several statements like "MBR is not compatible with UEFI unless placed in legacy support mode" at windows - UEFI with MBR partition table? - Super User. Also, the Microsoft tutorial from UEFI Legacy mode to full UEFI is a tutorial on using MBR2GPT.

If you know of another method, please let me know that it is.

In the mean time, I still think Partition Wizard should have resized my Windows partition. Maybe I just can't read directions, but I think I may have some underlying problem.

By the way, I ran chkdsk /r and it found no problems, but I don't know if it checks everything that might get in the way of resizing partitions. There must be some sort of MBR partition table or directory outside of my C: partition.

Uh, never mind. When I looked at the Disk Management display I noticed it now showed shrink space. And this time MBR2GTP worked fine. Something in my fumbling must have worked. (There was no new partition or free space from Partition Wizard so I have no idea what happened.)
