Cannot get data from usb attached ssd

I have a laptop that kicked the bucket. It had a new 250GB WD Blue Nand Sata SSD M.2 2280. I am trying to access it via USB connection to a desktop. I can see the drive in device manager and in disk management. I cannot see it in explorer. I attached a pick of disk management. The drive shows as not initialized. If I choose GPT, I get what you see in the attached pic. Not sure where to go from here. I just want to get the pics, docs from the drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The error suggests its lost the parition cable so you will need free parition recovery software. If possible try on another pc and usb port

What M.2->USB adapter are you using?

Thanks Samuria. After googling for answers to my issue, and tried all I found, I just assumed the ssd was corrupted or something. I put it back in the laptop and everything is working. No idea what happened. Its a new ssd. My friend is going to be very happy. Will tell her to immediately back up everything. Thanks for the tip on free partition recovery software. I will look into that. As usual, I learned something new. Thank you.

Its an external USB 3.1 Gen 2 M.2 NVMe PCIe ssd enclosure adapter.

Here is the link to what I bought:

M.2 drives can be NVMe or SATA. That enclosure does not support SATA drives.

Note: MyDigitalSSD M2X NVMe USB 3.1 Gen 2 enclosure adapters are NOT compatible with SATA, AHCI PCIe, or B key NVMe PCIe M.2 SSDs.

Thank you for the info. I had a hard time trying to find an enclosure. I read online that a two notch ssd was SATA and a one notch was NVMe. I do however have a SATA SSD. I need to do some learning on the SSD drive types and such. Google, he I come. If you know of a site that explains it, please post it. Thanks again for your guidance.

    M.2 SSDs are B-keyed (1 notch), M-keyed (1 notch), or B+M keyed (2 notches). Motherboard/enclosure sockets are either B- or M-keyed.

From the Wiki (M.2 - Wikipedia) you can see that both key types support both SATA and PCIe (NVMe) so you can't tell from the physical connector which protocol is being used. You have to match the specs on both the motherboard/enclosure and the SSD to determine whether both support the same protocol.

    Motherboard/enclosure socket
    SSD module
    Support
    B-key B-key SATA or PCIe x2
    B-key B+M-key SATA or PCIe x2
    B-key M-key Won't fit
    M-key B-key Won't fit
    M-key B+M-key SATA or PCIe x2
    M-key M-key SATA or PCIe x4

    • In general NVMe drives will be M-keyed since they want all 4 PCIe lanes for maximum performance. But theoretically you could have an NVMe drive that only uses 2 lanes.
    • In general SATA drives will be B+M-keyed for maximum compatibility. But theoretically manufacturers could choose to use B- or M-key also.

Thanks for your post. It really helps me get a better understanding of SSD technology. I did find a few places googling that helped as well. Will spend some time on this to ensure I know what the heck I'm doing.
