1) There computer has 12 GB DDR3 RAM.
a) One RAM module is 8 GB.
b) Another RAM module is 4 GB.
2) On some HP notebooks the RAM may be easily assessed and on others the RAM may be hidden under the keyboard.
If you do not have easy access there is an owners manual however for notebooks it generally best to get them serviced either by HP or a local computer store.
3) If you have easy access to all RAM modules then remove all modules and re-seat one module for testing.
4) Test each RAM module in the same DIMM.
5) You can run the HP hardware diagnostics for each test to differentiate a good from malfunctioning RAM module.
6) Alternatively you can run Memtest86+ version 5.01 for 8 or more passes.

Testing is not done by time but by passes.
The more the passes the better the testing conditions.
A substantial portion of the testing can be performed overnight.
Testing time is approximately 1 - 2 hours / GB RAM.
Just one error is a test fail and then testing can be aborted.
If one or both RAM modules fail then testing is completed.
If both RAM modules pass when tested in the same DIMM then the other DIMM need to be tested.
For each RAM test use a camera or smart phone camera to take a pictures and post images into the thread.
