Cant get rid of latency/crackles, Latency monitor report enclosed

Hi all, apologies for the length, trying to enclose as much info as possible.

I have an external firewire audio interface that I use with music keyboard and various music software.
Having problems with latency. It sounds like a static type crackle, cant seem to get to the root of the cause. Doesn't matter if I'm listening through my monitors or my headphones (both plugged into my Pro24).

It doesn't matter if I set my ASIO buffer low or high, sure if I set it to 2048 there's a noticeable wait between me pressing the key and the sound playing, but whether I set it to 2048 or I set it to just 32. the crackle still keeps appearing

Running Latency monitor shows problems. Please see attached text file and pics

Before I ran it this time, I unplugged my Focusrite Pro24 firewire lead, I went into the BIOS and disabled the firewire port. I exited out of malewarebytes, mouse software etc etc etc. Only thing I left running was Avast, but I disabled all shields until next reboot.

Getting exactly the same result as when the pro24 was plugged in and enabled, and when I left all software running.Sometimes I can play just 2 or 3 notes before it does it, other times it does it after about a min or more. I've been putting up with it for months, but really want to get to the bottom of it.

All drives are SSD. All plugged into 6GB Sata apart from drive F

Hi, has your system previously run successfully with the same hardware?

If so, when did this problem start?

If it started at a particular point, is that related to any feature update (upgrade) or other update?

Which Windows build are you using?
This can be really important, and most people don't mention it or include it in their specs.
    Windows key + R, winver

Noted you have no wlan - desktop.

    These two appear significant:
    USBport.sys
    asmtxhci.sys

You should be able to perform further analysis if needed using the Windows Performance Recorder.
There are threads demonstrating this in the context of stutter.

If you search the forum for e.g.
    Windows Performance Recorder Latency
    or
    Windows Performance Recorder Latencymon
    you will find these.

Some people find changes in the drivers applied after a feature upgrade cause such problems.

Thanks. It's always done it. In fact I used to have a USB interface (NI Komplete Audio 6) and got rid of it and changed to the Focusright Pro24 firewire, hoping to solve it.

I last upgraded my MB in 2013 and had the problem then, must have been windows 8, I just kept putting off fixing it time and time again.

It's only really become unbearable because I've just bought a digital piano, and after hearing the sound on there, I notice the click/crackle a mile away when playing my PC keyboards. But it does seem to be doing it more lately. Some people wouldn't even notice it (my son, until I pointed it out to him) It's not so much an intrusive crackle as a tiny static. Not sure how to explain it, a bit like dust or a tiny scratch on a vinyl LP

I can play music through VLC, this too is rooted through my Focusright Pro24, and it rarely (if ever) makes the noise, . Only difference is VLC is using windows sound and my music software is using Focusrite's ASIO (and my previous audio interface used Native Instruments ASIO driver)

The closet sound I've found so far is the very first second of this video (ignore the rest of the vid).

I did post the win version no in my previous post, I've just made that part bold (Edit: I see I forgot to add it to my system spec, now done)

Many thanks for all your suggestions, I will go through it all after dinner

Hi, sorry I missed the version number- it was in the middle of a long post is my only excuse. So that's 1809 latest.

Now the steady hiss is (I think) not typical of the effect of latency. That tends to introduce stutter- hesitation. So whilst there is a potential problem with latency, my guess would be you'd be looking for another source.

Do you ever have a case where you can play audio on your PC and have no noise apparent? Eliminate USB, peripherals- disconnect anything you don't need. Then try simply playing an audio file.

Assuming your previous LatencyMon run was with devices connected, retry that for comparison.
the click/crackle a mile away when playing my PC keyboards
But that is more typical of latency problems.

So I'm wondering if you might have two separate problems- 1 the white noise-like hiss, the other a driver-related latency problem? If you were lucky the latency issue only arises with some peripheral connected.

    Thanks.

I don't think I'm explaining myself properly. There is no white noise hiss, it's literally at the very very very start of that youtube vid, the first nano second, the very very first bit of sound before the hiss starts. Bad choice of vid, but was the only one I could find that sounded close.

I do get times where I can turn my PC on, load up the same piece of music s/w and by the 2nd note I've played, it clicks/crackles. Other times I can do exactly the same thing and it wont start happening for ages. But once it starts, it doesn't stop.

Oddly it was doing it constantly before I installed Windows performance Toolkit, but I haven't had one single click (yet) since installing and running it.

Just tried running latency monitor for 1 minute while playing keyboard, nothing, (while the pic in my OP has the time as 1:34, it error ed after about 3 seconds.)

And just tried it a second time, and an error after 30 seconds (this time not playing, although it makes no difference whether I'm playing or not normally) .

I will try unplugging various things and report back

Just unplugged all USB devices except for the mouse and ran latency test, only plugged in keyboard to report back

As you can see from pic, still failed.

Then I unplugged the keyboard, again and also unplugged the Ethernet cable, this time it ran fine for 5 mins (only pagefault being just under 4 mins)

Then I ran the test again with just mouse and Ethernet cable, it failed after 10 secs

Then I ran the test again with ALL USB things plugged in and turned on but NO Ethernet cable.

After 5 mins, not even a single page fault

And finally, I plugged the Ethernet cable in and gave it one more try (with all the USB) Failed within 30 seconds.

So I've .now found the culprit (many many thanks)t, it's my Wired Ethernet. Now to work out how to fix it

On another forum, someone pointed out that

As for the 82579V, Intel released a new Win10 driver(V23.5) for that on Dec 6, 2018

Sure enough, updating solved my problem.
