    Driver Name: kxdiskprot.sys
    File Location: c:\windows\system32\drivers
File Description: Kionix disk protection filter driver
    File Version: 1.1.3.6 [1.1.3.6]
    Product Name: Kionix freefall protection
    Product Version: 1.1.3.6 [1.1.3.6]
    Company Name: Kionix, Inc.
You have the Kionix KXCNL Freefall Sensor Driver installed. If I look at Dell support they don't have the driver listed for Alienware 13 (per your Computer specs) but they do have a version available for the Alienware 13R2. The driver version available for model 13R2 is v1.1.4.1 and newer then v1.1.3.6 shown installed. (p.s. If you really DO have an Alienware model 13, not 13R2, did this driver come with your laptop or did you install it on your own???)

Go to Dell Support and lookup your drivers based on Service Tag. (Scroll to end of Dell's driver list as you may have click View More to see everything) Is the Kionix driver listed? If yes, uninstall the old version. Does the problem still occur after uninstall (you can re-run Filter Load Order to verify its driver filter was also uninstalled). Then install the new free fall sensor driver.

Josh, do you have a USB 2.0 port you can try your drives in? Also, What kind are they; my very old external drives are USB 3.0, so I'm wondering what yours actually are.
    Thanks for asking wynona,

I believe both of my ports on this laptop are 3.0 I have newer drives they might be 3.0? not sure how to tell, one of them is an sd card reader digipower multireader...the others are sandisk cruiser glides but even on phones i cannot access the storage through usb. Its really odd that my computer will, at times let me access these devices, then revert back to not letting me for what seems to be no reason at all.

Hi Wynona, thanks for the reply and sorry for my delay,

Both ports are 3.0 and I'm unsure of the flash drive I'm trying to use its the sandisk cruzer glide, it says it's compatible with 2/3...the other is a digipower DP-MCR4 card reader, as far as i can tell that is a 2.0(has always worked fine on this computer before this issue), those and two apple iphones do not give me access to their storage, it seems anything classified as a storage device triggers this blocking. The usb ports do charge devices and I've had keyboards and mice hooked up to them and they work fine.

I deleted 1.1.3.6 then ran Filter Order, it said it couldnt be found, as expected and then installed 1.1.4.1, re-ran Filter Load Order, and it says 1.1.3.6

    Im baffled. lol.

    With driver deleted:

With Driver Installed (1.1.4.1 from Dell Website)

    Driver details from Device Manager:

So maybe the driver is going to the wrong folder, does anyone know the difference between the "drivers" folder and the "driverstore" folder in system32? It looks like there's kionix files in both folders.

Re: the Filter Driver Load Order Tool.
What you see in top half are the filters (their filenames) as defined in the registry. When you select a filter, you see info about the filter file that's stored on disk. The driver uninstaller is removing the filter file on disk but not removing its reference in the registry!

    > Create a System Restore point
    > Open notepad and copy/paste the code below into it
    > Save and change the file extension to .reg
    > Double click the file to run. It will reset the Upper Class filter for the disk driver to contain just partmgr (which is from Microsoft). You can rerun the tool to verify
    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e967-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}]
    "UpperFilters"=hex(7):70,00,61,00,72,00,74,00,6d,00,67,00,72,00,00,00,00,00
Reboot. Test a USB flash drive again. Still have the problem?

    Thanks for replying,

I have uninstalled the kionix free fall sensor before and It caused all sorts of issues with booting up, I had to go through the lengthy repair scenario, so I really don’t want to mess with it again, So to be sure, what You are instructing me to do is keep kionix on my system but change the registry for removable media to bypass kionix?

Fyi When running windows usb troubleshooter, it says my usb controller is in a failed state ...but work fine with other devices just not storage.

    No.

I'm saying the kionix driver uninstaller didn't entirely remove all of the driver. It deleted files on disk but left a file reference behind in the registry. To correctly uninstall the driver, we want to assure the file reference is also removed from the registry. The .reg file I provided resets the class upper filter to contain only partmgr (a Microsoft filter). The kionix filter reference is removed.

A bit about "filters" - The kionix filter is a "class" filter defined for device class = DISK. That means Windows applies the kionix filter to any and all disk I/O. Your internal disks, flash drives, external drives, etc. That's how a single (flaky) class filter can screw up multiple devices in the same device class - which is what you're seeing albeit, in your case, just removable not internal disks.

So you're between a rock and a hard place. I can't be certain the kionix filter is the problem but the only way to check is uninstall the driver and make sure its filter is also removed. When you uninstall the driver we're seeing a piece still left in the registry. That MAY be why you have problems rebooting after the driver uninstall. Because a file reference is left in the registry but Windows can't find that file on disk. But, of course, I can't say that for certain.

IMHO. I'd image the hard drive (you'll find tutorials to use Macrium Reflect for disk imaging). Uninstall kionix. Use Filter Order tool to also make sure the file reference removed. Use the .reg file provided, if needed, to remove it manually. Reboot and test to see if that's been the root of the problems. In worst case, you can restore the old image you created earlier if needed

One more thought... before doing the work above, create and boot from Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk. Test your flash drive. If it now works booted from rescue media, then it's an OS software issue and you can try seeing if it's the kionix filter.

In any case, you might also try reinstalling any chipset drivers dell has for your pc.

Thanks so much for the explanation and all the help thus far, unfortunately since i cant access usb drives and the laptop doesnt have a cd drive, I can't create a rescue disk.

I will create a restore point just in case windows gives me issues booting after uninstalling the kionix driver, and make the registry edit. I am confident in getting my system back up and running if i do run into issues, its just a time consuming headache lol. I will report back with my results.
