My Back USB 3 Keep Disconnecting & Reconnecting/ Refreshing

I have a new HP pavilion 509-P0044 with Win10 Home (Clean install), Ryzen graphics card. My 4 back USB 3 keep disconnecting & reconnecting. Maybe refreshing is the proper term? This doesn't happen on my back USB 2 or front USB 3. I've gone through all the usual solutions. I set Power Options to disable USB Suspend. I shut off Fast Start. I disabled allowing device to sleep under Device Manger. Removed several ghost items as well. I've seen this on 2 different external HDD. It effects my mouse & keyboard too. All 4 are problematic. I even tried changing my items around in case all 4 couldn't be used at the same time. Big mistake. I had to put my webcam in, and it turned on and off several times. Then Windows crashed so bad, I got the Blue Screen of Death twice. I couldn't load it upon restarting my computer (even System Restore failed). So I had to reinstall Windows, and then reinstall everything I installed 3 weeks prior when I got the system. Even shutting off Windows Search in case the indexing was causing a problem didn't work. I changed the drive letter of my HDD around, in case something went wrong the first time I changed it. Still the same problem. I even heard my network adapter could be having a conflict. But Device Manger says it's fine.

Some people said it was a graphics card problem, or a chipset problem. The links to install new drivers and such also failed. I heard a lengthy cable is the cause, but mine's rather short. Plus it works fine on USB 2 or my front USB3. Doesn't need 2 USB cables because it worked fine on my Dell for years with just one. Again, other USB's work fine. Also, wouldn't explain my mouse and keyboard not working for a few seconds here and there.

It also happens randomly. I've gone seconds before the problem starts up. I've gone 5 or 10 minutes. Longest was 40 minutes. I've also noticed my 4th USB 3 works best, and the 3rd works worse (from the back, left to right)

At this point I don't know what else to do. Every solution that works for others doesn't work for me. I fear my USB3 themselves are faulty and need replacing, because nothing else works. Everything works fine on the other USBs, so it's not my devices or cables.

Hi atherworld. Welcome to the RenForums @atherworld

First I would start with using a product like Macrium Reflect. Do a system image and build their recovery media. Easier to do a restore than a clean install.

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

Next I would check BIOS for an update. Not saying to update but at lease understand if one is available. Updating a BIOS comes with some risk. If you decide to update BIOS read instructions carefully and be patient.... very patient.

Not sure what version of Windows 10 you are using but I would reload version that came with machine, 1709 / 1803. Then I would load all the drivers on the HP site. Then do not load any other software. Want machine to look like it did from Factory. You should actually have a recovery partition that would set it back to this state.

Test. I would also test in such a way that you are using just one device in rear with the goal of isolating any potentially bad device. Yes I saw it works in front.

If after loading the original version of Windows and HP drivers if the issue persists pull the warranty card. It is a new machine, it should be HP's problem not yours.

I greatly fear this might actually be related to Windows 10 Creator Update. So not sure if any of that will work if Windows 10 CU is the culprit. Worse, I'm pretty sure my HP came with it already installed, as I'm not seeing anyway to roll it back.

If it came with this error then let HP "fix". Their machine should work as shipped. You likely spent good money, all they can say is "No".

You don't want to be the owner of a device that can't run Win 10.

If you think it is related to CU and I saw you cleaned installed, what version did you clean install. Did you try 1809?

    I would image before trying.

I've seen this kind of behavior on my own systems when the current draw for devices plugged into a USB controller (group of USB ports tied to a motherboard header) exceeds the carrying capacity. I've had this happen to me, for instance, when trying to power two 2+ TB drives in a double drive caddy, or when I've plugged in a 2+TB driver into a USB 3 hub with multiple other devices. More recently I've noticed that higher capacity mSATA SSDs (500 GB and 1 TB in my case) when combined with other devices can also cause strange behaviors (and drives or devices ping-ponging up/on and down/off, with constant "USB device bonging" as a profound clue to what's going on). See this SuperUser thread for a useful discussion of voltage/current maxima: What is the power output of a USB port? - Super User.

For the situation @EdTittel describes I have used Add-in PCIe X1 cards with USB 3 ports and my latest solution is an Eaxer drive dock that is Self-Powered and has 2 slots for drives [useful for cloning] and 3 x USB 3 ports on it. As Ed points out, the main thing is the power requirements versus the power source. The power issue can be alleviated with using Self-Powered USB 3 Hubs, same for USB 2. Also involved is the power supply in the computer, may not be quite strong enough for the needs.

Brand new computer, hardware issues, take it back to where you got it from or have HP fix it.

    Thanks.

and this problem was there on the installed version?

Did you try one device at a time to see if device related? and then two at a time to check load that Ed mentioned?

Yeah. Always happens. Seems the 4th one (the one on the right when looking at it from the back) lasts the longest, and the third is the worst offender. I'm pretty sure it happened from the start. Bit hard to tell since I used Windows Update almost immediately upon setting up WIn10 when I got it, and the time it holds a connection varies. Seems my only option is to go to bets Buy and have the Geek Squad work their magic.
