Trying to fix Error code 32

Running Win 10 Pro Version 22H2

I am unable to access my DVD (ASUS DVD RAM GH92N). It seems to power up when a DVD is inserted but File Explorer doesn't recognize it and nothing will autostart.

I don't use the DVD drive very much so I don't know when the problem may have started.

Device Manager reports "A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)"

There are 2 drivers associated with the DVD. (cdrom.sys & Afc.sys) Afc.sys is associated with Arcsoft Total Media Extreme which has been installed for a very long time but not used recently)

I've searched and attempted a number of fixes:

    - uninstalled the device, rebooted to reinstall the device

    - tried to update driver but Windows reports that I have the best driver.

    - tried to manually update the driver with an older downloaded driver. Windows still reported that I have the best driver.

    - one suggestion I found suggested changing the start value of the driver (in the registry) from 3 to 1. It was already set to 1 so I changed it to 3. That didn't work so I returned it to 1.

    - I attempted to manually delete the existing driver by uninstalling the DVD then changing the name of the existing driver from cdrom.sys to cdrom.old. My plan was to move the downloaded older version of cdrom.sys so the system would use it. However, the system wouldn't allow me to change the name. (TrustedInstaller Error). I attempted to change the security permissions on the driver but all the options were greyed out.

    Now I'm at a loss.

    Can anyone help?

As a start, just on the aspect above, have you looked at this ? > Turn On or Off AutoPlay in Windows 10

Also, have a look at the Related Tutorials at the BOTTOM of the above Tutorial [ there are a few ], as they may also be related.

    I hope this helps.

    Paul Black,

    Thank you for the suggestion.
Autoplay is turned on for all media and devices.
Specifically, for Removable drives, it is set to "Open folder to view files". (This used to work)
Memory card has the same settings and it works when a memory card is inserted in the reader.

I didn't find anything in the tutorials that seemed to relate to fix the issue.

I looked at the events of the DVD drive in Device Manager/Properties/Events. Here is the report"
Device SCSI\CdRom&Ven_ASUS_DVD&Prod_RAM_GH92N\4&15828421&0&050000 had a problem starting.

    Driver Name: cdrom.inf
    Class Guid: {4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
    Service: cdrom
    Lower Filters:
    Upper Filters:
    Problem: 0x20
    Problem Status: 0x0

Apparently the driver is not loading but I can't see the reason.

Anything else that I can look at?

Has the drive ever worked with Win 10 installed?

Device Manager reports "A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)"

Given the above, one logical approach would be to completely uninstall Arcsoft Total Media Extreme (e.g. with Revo Uninstaller) so the possible driver conflict (?) cannot occur.

You could create a System Restore point before doing so/create a disk image so if that doesn't help or you want to get back to your current installation status whilst trouble shooting you can.

could well be of interest- albeit it's old.

dallchina, Thank you for your suggestion

I attempted to uninstall Arcsoft with both Revo and the native uninstallation icon. In both cases, I got the message "An installation support file could not be installed. Catastrophic failure" I searched for a solution and one web site suggested renaming the file folder C:\Program Files (x86)\InstallShield Installation Information” to InstallShield Installation Information.old. I did this and the native uninstall link attempted to reinstall Arcsoft but failed. I then used Revo to attempt an uninstall. It omitted the normal uninstallation process and progressed to identifying remaining files and links. I deleted these and the program was gone. However, Windows still loaded the Afc.sys driver. I manually deleted the afc.sys driver and rebooted. Now the only driver associated with the DVD drive is cdrom.sys. However, the DVD drive is still unrecognized.

I find it curious that the icon in File Explorer for "InstallShield Installation Information" is faded compared to other folders. (image attached)

To answer your first question. Yes. the DVD previously worked perfectly for years. I haven't used it for quite some time so I can't associate any system change with the failure.

Given the driver event report that it "had a problem starting", it seems that something is preventing cdrom.sys from starting properly.

    I'm at a loss.

    - simply indicates this is a hidden system folder- which you wouldn't normally see except you've set the option in 'Change folder and search' options in f explorer.

Now you've uninstalled the Arcsoft program/removed the other driver, do you still see
Device Manager reports "A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)"
    ?

However noting this is what I see on a laptop with a DVD drive:

    - worrying about afc.sys - which I also happen to have- seems inappropriate...

    (oodivd.sys is from O&O Diskimage).

renaming the file folder C:\Program Files (x86)\InstallShield Installation Information” to InstallShield Installation Information.old.
    - hope you've reversed that change.

Is your drive visible in 'Devices and Printer'?

Also note the 4th & 5th symptoms here: (although this wouldn't have been something I'd have considered normally)

The drive was not visible in 'Devices and Printers'

    However, the problem is resolved.
The Youtube video you recommended suggested making two registry changes. I made both and the second one seems to have resolved the problem.

    Thank you for the suggestions!
