    Updating drivers through device manager

    All,

Whilst I’ve been trying to update my sound drivers I have noticed that drivers for ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery, Qualcomm Wireless Network Adapter and some under System Devices such as Memory Controller & Intel Management Engine Interface can all be updated through Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software.

Would it be recommended to update these drivers this way? Or leave as they are?

Depends on whether you are a Type 1 Computer user, or a Type 2 Computer user.

Type 1 Computer User - "If it isn't broken, do not try to fix it."

Type 2 Computer User - "If it isn't broken, fix it until it is broken."

Haha I’m a bit of both to be honest.

Is there any benefit in updating them drivers though?

It is certainly possible. I use Intel's Driver and Support Assistant every month or so, just to check on updates to Intel products in my Dell XPS system. However, Dell customized some of the drivers for Intel hardware used in my system, so occasionally it will happen that the newest Intel driver for a given device or component is not compatible with my system actually built by Dell, with Intel tech and hardware.

If that sounds confusing to you, join the club!

Bottom line: If you want to try an update not specifically recommended by your hardware manufacturer, be sure you have fully backed up your OS and your data, just in case the unthinkable happens. Because sometimes it does.

Hmmm. Some of the drivers I mentioned in the first post are like from 2006 and are Microsoft drivers.

Surprised that they don’t get updated via Windows Update.

Intel’s Driver Support Assistant came up with no updates necessary.

"Some of the drivers I mentioned in the first post are like from 2006 and are Microsoft drivers."
"Surprised that they don’t get updated via Windows Update."

That 2006 date is a technicality, it is a synthetic date. The drivers are actually a lot more recent, if you dig deeper. I have several with that synthetic date, but the drivers actually come from the latest version of Windows 10 1809 and dated 15.09.18.

Very unlikely, as mentioned you can dig deeper, they have been updated, but if you don't have any yellow warning triangles etc then don't worry about it.

The 2006 date comes from Microsoft and is a "trick" to permit vendor-supplied drivers to always take precedence over drivers that MS bundles with Windows and stores in the Microsoft Update Catalog. Here's a very interesting MS Developer blog post that explains what's going on here: Why are all Windows drivers dated June 21, 2006? Don The Old New Thing.

For simplicity you can download Snappy Driver installer (the Full version is the whole database, you need the Lite version which looks online for drivers and downloads only those necessary). Run it, and it will tell you if there is any update to your drivers. You can periodically update the database and see if something new is available. Warning, do not use this tool in tablets, or you will lose touch control and rotation. To fix it you have to download and install the Platform (chipset) drivers from manufacturer.
