How to erase partitions on SSD?

    Hi folks,

I got a SSD drive and it has two partitions on it. The drive is 500gb and one of the partitions is 10gb. How can I completely delete the 10gb partition and get the drive back to a functioning 500gb drive again please? When I use the Disk Management program the "delete volume" option is greyed out.

The device is called BACKUP and is my E drive. When I mount it, it gives me a D drive also. This D drive is called SYSTEM and I can't access it as I get the message "You don't currently have permission to access this folder". It says click "Continue" to permanently get access and when I do that I get another message saying I have been denied access and I need to check the folder's security settings (Windows is calling the harddrive a folder). When I do that it doesn't have any security settings!

All I would like is to have a single partition on my SSD drive.

    Many thanks!

You could try running diskpart from a command prompt.

    Then :
    list disk
select disk X (where X is the relevant disk number)
    list partition

if you are sure this disk does have 2 partitions and you don't want either then enter :
    clean

What this will do is destroy the partition table so you can recreate it (by formatting the drive) and all the space will be avaliable to you.

There are some decent screenshots here : How to Diskpart Erase/Clean a Drive Through the Command Prompt

There is a possiblilty that there is a second volume defined in the drives firmware and it is not actually a partition on the disk (I have a external drive that does this and it adds a virtual CD drive with junk encryption software) but a 10GB SYSTEM partition seems a bit peculiar for this scenario.

Post pictures from diskpart if you are unsure before running the clean command.

Hi, you might find it easier to use a 3rd party partition manager e.g. Minitool Partition Wizard. This should allow you to delete the partition via a restart. Failing that you could use its bootable disk:

Certainly. I should add that this is an SSD given to me. It was used as a backup drive so I want to make it my own backup drive.

    Thank you guys.
