PC won't boot past sign in screen (squeak squeak)

I have similar issue. Just the start up, log in screen, won't open anything after that. I got a virus last year. It installed windows 7 on a preinstalled windows 8 PC. I took to Geek Squad who absolutely messed up my PC. Put in three new mother boards. Who does that? Two new fans (they installed wrong drivers for MB and did something to the fan). Finally in exasperation called HP who "STANDS BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS" and after being shipped across the US this time total 12 times, they rebuilt me a PC, preinstalled with Win10. Want to know what? It has the same thing "backup to win7". I have NO idea what is going on here. My original PC had never said or referenced Win7, ever. Nothing had a date earlier than 07/30/2013 - the preinstalled Win8. I bought the Pro, the 8.1 and then got the 10 but it took some manipulating. Now with the new, preinstalled win10, it says "backup your win7". I can't believe it. Why would this be??? I'm at this point. I could go on but won't. I want to follow your thread and see if anyone comes up with a solution. I needed a repair disk, a boot disk and wanted to back up my PC but it defaults to Win 7. So (?)Sure appreciate your notes though. The wheel in the hub goes round and round, squeak squeak squeak.

I've seen variations on this problem, but usually they are able to get to safe mode! I can't believe Microsoft released such an unstable product!! I need my computer back!!

So did everyone in this thread that had this issue go buy a PS2 mouse / keyboard?

Surprised no one came back and chimed in if they found a solution

This is the only thread I found online to my extremely weird issue. I have a Dell Inspiron that originally came as a Windows 8 and I upgraded to Windows 10 about 4 months ago or so and it was going very well with me. The only flaw from when I updated from 8 to 10 is that my Kaspersky AntiVirus system got completely removed for some weird reason. I had to wait until just yesterday to get the antivirus installation CD and code from my father as he lives in a different county. Kaspersky installed and requested a restart so I could continue with the process. It restarted and when it opened I get stuck on the welcome screen with my keyboard and mouse completely unresponsive. I inserted a usb mouse and it worked, however I still can't use the keyboard and can't access the Admin account to try and disable/enable the keyboard and touchpad as it contains a password. I opened my extra account with the usb mouse but it is not an Admin account and I can't really do anything. However when I check the properties of both the mouse and keyboard it says that they were unable to start. This came at a very inappropriate time as I need my laptop for all my university classes. I will be back in the US on Sunday and am considering going to a Microsoft store to try and resolve this. Should I skip going to the Microsoft store? Should I buy a new laptop? I don't know what to do and would appreciate someone's direct advice for such a situation.

Could a clean installation be a problem for you?

Try shutting off the pc as soon as you see the windows logo by pressing the power button until it shuts off, you will need to do this 3 times then you will get the recovery environment, is your mouse or keyboard working here if so this can probably be fixed.

This will boot windows 10 to recovery, then choose to boot to safe mode and the keyboard and mouse stay working. Then you can access all your files and install drivers.
    Thank you!!!

    My fix:
Use TeamViewer from another computer to login to the machine with "dead" keyboard. Install Logitech SetPoint which itself I don't think has anything to do with drivers but for whatever reason nudges the keyboard just enough so it works.

I'm sorry to be so ignorant, but I'm not understanding what you mean about a "ps2" keyboard. I have a Dell desktop with a wired keyboard. When I unplugged bith the wired keyboard and wireless mouse prior to booting up, I first got a black screen that said "keyboard failure ". When I plugged everything back in after booting up, it was still not recognized. I also tried using a new wireless USB keyboard, but got the same result: still frozen on the login screen! What can I do now? Since it doesn't recognize the mouse nor keyboard, I can't boot into safe mode!!

    Hi,

This happened tome as well. To resolve the issue, I tried switching keyboard language & layout (bottom right corner of the screen).

I had the same issue upgrading from Windows 7 to 10...

    Mouse: Razer Taipan
    Keyboard: Razer Deathstalker

    so, not exactly "cheap crap".
Both Mouse and keyboard worked in Bios, on Boot the illumunation was turned off and obviously neither was (re)activated, so I got stranded on the Win 10 Splash Screen with no way to input.

Booting to Safe Mode (did I ever mention, that literally forcing you to risk killing your hardware, just to get to #(/%#! Safe Mode is probably one of the most stupid things, Microsoft ever did?) revealed, that in the hardware manager both mouse and keyboard were listed multiple times (5 x mouse, 3 x keyboard), so I removed all those (also ticked uninstall driver), rebooted to a splash-screen with finally working mouse & keyboard, logged in, reinstalled the drivers and everything's working ever since.

We've had the same problem I have a custom built gaming computer, unistalled windows 10 and had no mouse and keyboard response I have no way of installing a ps2 keyboard so in desperate panic, I disconnected the power and pulled the battery from the mother board for about a min my mouse and keyboard started working when I powered it back up, I'm reinstalling windows 7 just as a precaution but everything seems to be working fine now
