Is this normal for a drive to be that much slower than the manufacturers claimed speeds??
You may find it is "upto" # faster. I just installed an Adata XPG Gammix S11 Gaming with claimed speeds upto 3000mb, I get just above what you get (around 1500+), coming from a Samsung 850 Evo. (run about 560mb)
Did you install latest driver ?

Check for firmware update they have issued a lot of updates recently
On the surface, it seems that the 970 EVO is running on PCIe x2, instead of the preferred PCIe x4 connection. That would explain the read speed that you got. Check your BIOS/EUFI setting, if you can force x4 speed for the M.2 socket. I had the same issue in one system for the second Samsung 970 EVO NVMe drive, the EUFI defaulted to PCIe x2 speed and had to be enabled manually.
Thanks Cr00zng and everyone else of course I will try the Magician and I stated the drive was a 970 when in fact it is an 860 (my bad) not that it makes much difference I suppose.
Look for the "Interface" description, circled in the image below:
Ok Cr00ng I will tke a look because I cannot fidn anyting that vaguely looks as if it has anything to do with PCIe in the BIOS or that v4 or v6 feature either and I don't want to go fishing around in there until I know what I am doing.
Hiyya Croozng my PCIe is Gen 3x2 but I don't know what that means to be honest or how I can change it to 3x4 if that would make any difference??
My immediate thought would be that has something to do with graphics??
