John which system is this running in? Is it your Z77 board? Also, did you mean it is a 960 M.2?

Hello Steve long time eh? No mate it is an HP 470 G5 laptop as they tell me that I cannot run an M2 on the Z77board because of the technology involved because I was going to try and fit an adapter to be able to use an M2 with SATA connections.
Plus it is a 960 EVO that is in the machine and the figures are a tad better than the original Hynix M2 I just thought that the 960 claiming 3500 read would be more than the 17500 that the Samsung magician software is telling me it is running at.
OK. I'm not sure about the laptop bios. It shouldn't hurt to look around. You can always exit without saving if you are unsure. Maybe there is something in the bios to help you. If it is supposed to be running at X4 but is only running at X2, it can't run at the advertised speeds. Each lane carries a certain amount of bandwidth (Gen 3 is about 8 GB). The advertised speeds were for using 4 of those lanes. You are only using 2 of them if it is running at X2. I hope I explained that right/
I have never tried to run one on my z77 board, but I've been told you can run one, just can't boot from it. It would have to be used for another drive. I'm not sure, but that's what I have been told.
Thanks Steve I just don't know what the thing is running at and if you man RAM then I have 16GB in the machine sorry mate but I am not really fully aware of the new M2 set ups or the technology they use.
I will have another look in the BIOS but I am sure there was nothing that came close to mentioning PCI stuff.
What Z77 board do you have?they tell me that I cannot run an M2 on the Z77board
P8Z77-v pro bios with nvme module here, don't know if it will cross flash to non pro, otherwise you can request somebody creates one for you

Thanks SIW2 but I have the basic -V board so I don't think I shall be able to run an M2 on it. I am surprise however that Windows 10 hasn't sorted a fix for running an M2 on a SATA connection they seem to control just about everything else.
You can boot from nvme on any z77 board ( you don't need pro version ) - also z67, z68, B75, ETC.- you just need the nvme module added to the bios.
The only exception that I am aware of is the Intel business range e.g the DQ77MK, because they used signed bios which cannot be modified.
