Hi all,

I had this issue with a caddy drive of mine the other day (3 or 4 days ago).

All I needed to do was remove the caddy and reinsert it & it then loaded with no adverse issues.

Try a shutdown & reboot if you are worried about hot swapping the drive.

Thank you @nIGHTmAYOR for coming out with your experience. Yes, change to another connecting cable, plug it into another USB port. If those do not help, then proceed with bootice.

I just prepared my 500GB Seagate external disk and initialised it as a GPT drive.

Initialised as a GPT drive with Windows Disk Management. Bootice shows the ASCII Panel on the right which you can ignore.


As you can see, the sector map is exactly the same as the screenshot I posted in my post # 24( which I picked up from another site showing the Sector 0 Protective MBR.)

It will be the same in all GPT disks initialised with Windows Disk Management.

But for an external drive, most of it will be not be necessary. When I continue, I shall post a screenshot of how sector 0 will look when initialised with third party Partitoning Tools such as Minitool Partition Wizard.

Out for a dinner meet and will return after that to continue.

Before trying any Partition Recovery or Data Recovery, you should try this.

Loss of the protective MBR in your 4TB GPT along with the GPT header and GPT Partition table could lead to it becoming unallocated. ( If you had used an incompatible dock, this could happen)

You should check Sector 0 of your disk with bootice. If it doesn't match exactly with the following screenshot, you should zero all the fields write these into the fields and save it it to sector 0. Post a screenshot of it before I give the go ahead.



There is every chance of your disk coming alive. ( Unfortunately I do not have any drive >2TB to try it alive)

Download your Windows bit version of bootice 32bit or 64 bit.

Please make sure you are operating on the correct disk when you use bootice. When you click on Sector Edit it will take you directly to Sector 0.

Well, that is certainly an interesting twist to solving the problem : ) I have not as yet attempted to recover the drive using any of the valuable suggestions already mentioned due to family commitments and the US Holiday.

So I assume that once I run the program I am able to select sector 0 and see if it matches exactly with your screenshot. The rectangular squares that I see towards the bottom of the screenshot did you make them or is that how the screenshot looks? And why are they in a rectangle?

I am not sure I follow when you say "you should zero all the fields." Zero all what fields? And then when you say "write these into the fields" write what into the fields and save? the zero's?

Sorry, my unfamiliarity with this procedure I am afraid that I might cause more damage than good.

Well. it looks like I won't be able to tackle this with yours or the other solutions until early this week so if you have the time and inclination I would certainly welcome a primer for dummies step by step. Thanks for the input.

Thanks for the input. The docking station with the accompanying USB cable is working with my other USB external 2TB and 4TB drives.

Not to worry. As I write this thesis , you will be guided through A-Z. In order to make it self-contained, I shall be repeating some steps already explained in my Seven Forums thread. When you click on the download link, a popup window will open. Click on "Software download (US) -x86". Wait till download completes. The downloaded zip file - BOOTICE_2016.06.17_v1.3.4.0.zip

Extract this to your C drive. Find the folder BOOTICE_2016.06.17_v1.3.4.0 in your C drive. You will find BOOTICEx64_2016.06.17_v1.3.4.0.exe and BOOTICEx86_2016.06.17_v1.3.4.0.exe

If you have 64bit Windows retain BOOTICEx64*.exe and delete the other.
If you have 32bit Windows retain BOOTICEx86*.exe and delete the other so that you don't click on the wrong *.exe file.

Don't do anything with that till I give further instructions for I have to complete my post #26 after the sun rises.
