    portable hard drive concern

Hi, I've got a number of portable hard drives but they are often not really portable, I only use them home but from time to time, especially for the Seagate one, where it didn't come with rubber pads at the bottom, from time to time, I could accidentally move it a little bit (very little bit probably less than 1 cm) during its operation.

Is it bad enough to the spinning hard drive? or am I overreacting? and that shouldn't be any problems unless it falls or drops from height or moving it vigorously and intentionally?

its pretty similar to russian roulette , i have a brother who had a habit of holding the drive in hand before unplugging it , he had been doing it for his hdd for well over a year that made me believe those things are solid as hell but then one day puff the media is gone , soooo continue being cautious but not obsessively cautious .

I guess if you are really concerned you could make your own rubber like pads using Silicone caulk and cornstarch.

How to Make Your Own Sugru Substitute: 15 Steps (with Pictures)
I call it Oogoo, an inexpensive silicone clay that is easily made. It can be used as an excellent substitute for Sugru. It can be hand molded or cast in forms. Or, it can be used as a casting silicone. It can be colored any color from white to black. It can also be made translucent to allow diffused light to shine through. It can even be painted on in thin layers. It has very good adhesive qualities and will stick to itself, glass, fabric, paper, wood, and some plastics and metals.

7 Things to Fix or Do With Oogoo: 9 Steps (with Pictures)
Silicone caulk be hacked into all kinds of useful things. This adhesive has the unique qualities of sticking well to some things and not others. This makes it easy to cast into many shapes. If you add corn starch, it can be cast or formed or glued into shapes of any thickness and it can set up within an hour. I call this mix Oogoo.

Starch Power: Generating Gooey Gels - Scientific American
Have you ever wondered how gels are made? You probably have several kinds of products around your house—some that you eat—that use gels: puddings, diapers, shoe insoles, packaging, ice cream, toothpaste and many more. A gel is a mixture of solid particles suspended in liquid. The solid particles in the gel can absorb water, causing the gel to swell and increase in volume. If you ever dunked a diaper in a tub of water, you have seen this in action; the diaper will swell as it absorbs the water, and if you cut the diaper open you will see the pieces of gel that are absorbing the water. These properties of gels make them quite useful for a variety of purposes. What are some of the things you can think of that gels can help do?

You could probably find many more uses or ways to create them using some Google Foo and this stuff.

You could probably coat the whole drive with this stuff for a buck or two. ((Warning might get too hot, not sure))
