DVD burner now showing in windows or device manager

Hi
for some strange reason the DVD writer; CDRW is not showing up in windows or in device manager. Inserting a DVD has no reaction whatsoever from the laptop.

i have tried says file checker , looked for the relevant upper registry entries, but found none. Have unplugged and reinserted the CDRW just in case.. also ran the hardware troubleshooter.

i desperation I have wiped the HDD and clean installed W10 Home 32 BIT. But made no difference.

i the device manager there isn’t even a heading for CD / DVD/RW, thought this should be there even if unpopulated !!!

any help would really be appreciated

found an old post similar to mine, tried deleting IDE channels 0 and 1 but avian made no difference....

Can you see it in BIOS ? That's first place to look for it.

Looked in the BIOS, not sure where to look though, it is showing as an option in the boot sequence, but maybe it’s there anyway regardless.....I don’t know.... I tried booting from a windows 7 boot dvd and it didn’t show as an option, did some whirring bit that was about all.....any help please

UPDATE.

Just checked the relevant registry key to delete the upper and lower filters but found 22 registry entries with the same key name, should this be so ?......can’t dlete any of them...HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e967-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

It has to be recognized in BIOS otherwise, OS, SW and drivers will not recognize it.

Will have another look , hopefully it’s listed, but as I said I didn’t see a device list in the bios....

I had an idea that my DVD drive was working several months ago, so I restored a macrium image taken in January 2018. I checked the BIOS and found that the CD ROM was listed as a boot option.... a good sign I thought, also when I press F12 during bootup I get an option to boot from the HDD or the CD ROM.....however it will not boot from any DVD or CD I insert , although it clunks and whirs, sounding like it’s trying to read the disk.

I really am at a loss t know if this is a hardware fault, ( not the DVD drive as a have replaced that with the same results, or some form of driver / software issue...

any help,please ?

Imhad thought of getting a caddy to fit in the DVD drive space and fit a spare SSD I have, but the caddy would need to have Sata internally but IDE externally to marry up with the laptop motherboard....so not sure if even that’s an option

That SSD would probably work faster with USB2 adapter than if converted from IDE even if that caddy did exist.

Agreed, really hope someone has an answer t my missing DvD drive problem

You'll just will have to test it on some other computer to make sure where the problem is. I don't think anybody makes IDE drives any more. There are things like this USB 2.0 to SATA IDE Adapter | Drive Adapters and Converters | StarTech.com that have all connections needed, that tray most probably has mini IDE connector (the smaller one on that picture). There's also possibility that laptop has some non standard CD/DVD tray connector like my old HP has.

Think it’s not worth the hastle and time to investigate the dvd drive, just don’t like mystery’s......

ps going to try dvd drives in a different laptop today but don’t think the drives are the problem
