Inserted USB stick on Suspend; burned out USB

I had a perfectly fine laptop in front of me. It fell asleep while I was doing something. Without thinking I inserted a usb stick and turned it back on. Touchpad gone. USB port gone.

The USB ports on the other side of the unit are working. One is 3.0, one is 2.0.

I tried booting to a windows install stick, and the touchpad is absent there as well. I tried turning off usb 3.0 in UEFI, no difference. I tried uninstalling the touchpad and the AMD USB controller and rebooting. I removed the battery and tried a power drain. Nothing.

This looks like a hardware issue. It looks like a simple mistake has fried one of the usb circuits on the MB?

No, I figured the Win usb stick would test the installed system adequately.

I have no touchpad in UEFI either.

Hard to believe a simple Suspend error in Windows could harm hardware. Something is amiss.

The port looks fine. After the power drain the machine said cmos battery was weak, bios had been cleared, had to set date again. So I think the cmos battery is a non issue. Horrible shame. There ought to be more protection against this, I suppose at the firmware level. Toshiba.

Do the ports still output power? Plug in a device with some indicator that it is powered up even if not recognized by the host.

USB ports do have over-current protection in the form of self-resetting fuses. They normally should reset by themselves when the offending device is removed but you can try removing all power for an extended period of time.

No, the mouse doesn't light up. I figured there must be a fuse on the MB. If it's self-resetting that would be awesome. I thought the power drain would do it, but no.

The motherboard chip-set has protection that don't take esd and over-current damage leave it alone that also motherboard have auto reset-able fuses.
The USB thumbdrive has nothing to do with the failure of the motherboard. It is bad luck.

U didn't make something wrong u can plug and take whatever usb when the pc is in shutdown hibernate or sleep state.
