Any way to downgrade ver. of MS Storage spaces volume w/o data loss?
subj
subj
Sure create a volume image and then restore that image to a single drive/ SSD, I would recommend Macrium Reflect to do this since it has worked for me with RAID Volumes in the past.
afaik no; I found no existing way to downgrade SS pool once upgraded. And I tried it hard.
Storage Spaces is simply a Software RAID solution, so create an image of the entire volume. Format each drive or better yet use Diskpart to Clean each drive then restore your volume Image to whichever hard drive/SSD you want to, Format your other drives NTFS and move any data you don't want on your main drive to you other drives as you see fit. it's no different than any other RAID Volume. Perhaps this tutorial will be more to your understanding Remove Drive from Storage Pool for Storage Spaces in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials
If I correctly understand the question I'd say that application can't be changed, doesn't show as uninstallable in Control Panel, Programs and Features nor in Turn Windows features on or off in the left column on that panel. I'm on Win10 Home, Version 1809 Build 17763.55 [got it before it was pulled off], haven't checked my Pro version yet.
1. Install Windows 1607 & 1709 dual boot system
2. Connect two free disks
3. Boot into 1607
4. Create storage pool, assign two free disks, create two-way mirror volume
5. Copy data to new volume
6. Reboot into 1709
7. Upgrade your Storage Space pool to gain new features as MS suggests
8. Reboot into 1607
9. Your Storage Space configuration looks now as in the picture, volume is inaccessible
10. Notice that doing step 7 was not the smartest idea, data are now accessible only from Windows 1709.
Question: Is it possible to simply revert Storage Spaces metadata back to version 1607? Answer: No. It is necessary to backup data, destroy upgraded pool, create new pool & mirror in Windows 1607, and restore data.
Is it so hard to understand what necros asks for?
It`s a mystery for me why it`s so hard to revert metadata. I doubt that every insider version changes code of storage spaces so drastically that it would be totally incompatible with previous version. Only MS knows it) Thanx for replies anyway.
Best practices:
1. Always create new storage pool under the lowest Windows version you (plan to) use.
2. Never upgrade existing storage pool under higher Windows versions.
Then your Storage Spaces volumes remain accessible from any Windows version.
WOW this sound even worse than a straight up RAID 0, This confirms I'll never use this feature if I ever need to have a RAID 0 Volume I'll use IRST
I still think if the OP has a full back up of the volume he should be able to restore it to a newer version of SS or a IRST Volume or a single drive
