IDE drive to SATA host

Thank you for all the replies.
@cereberus, I want to reuse the IDE devices because I don't want to waste them. In fact DVD writer is the one I want to reuse. Buying an SATA writer is very cheap nowadays, but if there is a way to reuse old ones than it will reduce carbon emission.
@das10, @muchomurka, there is no jumper at both boards and I've tried all jumper settings at my IDE devices: master, slave, cs. Also I use different power source for the boards and the devices when testing. @Others, thank you for your suggestions on IDE2USB and PCI2IDE, will try them out if settings/configurations cannot make my boards working.

Also @muchomurka, the board is connected to the devices directly, no cable is needed.

And some of the later PATA/Parallel ATA drives used no jumper for Master or Only drive, usually shows on the label on the drive case. [IDE can apply to both PATA and SATA.] If a cable is necessary the so-called 40-pin will work, just won't have the higher speed of the 80-pin [conductor] cable. The technical thing about the extra condutors was to prevent cross-talk/interference between the wires in the cable.

From looking at the picture of the adapter card I'd wonder if 2 Molex power connectors would be needed, one for the card and another for the drive itself?

Some things you can try:

- test functionality of your IDE devices in computer equipped with native IDE port
- test functionality of your converter boards in that computer
if this works the culprit may be in your configuration:
- make sure your SATA controller is set to AHCI mode in BIOS
- disable all SATA optimizations in BIOS (may be Aggressive LPM, Hot Plug, PCIe NAND etc)

- Ide drives are slower and lower capacity (he knows), older drives tend to failure (not always true).
- Use usb external adapter (for internal drives, of course).

I see no conflict. People are just stating alternatives - you are under no obligation to accept them. Sometimes a question is not easily answered.

Which is better?

1) lack of specific answers to a specific question (which often is not easy to answer)

2) suggested alternative solutions.

This is an open and truly helpful forum, and really you do guys a disservice really in complaining about such replies.

We value open discussion on this forum unlike others which can be very acidic. So please bear that in mind in the future.

To save u time:
I have the red one.
I had an lg writer DVD ide and it didn't work neither in a asrock z97 motherboard nor in a p5q asus with ich10r south bridge.
i/o errors and total freeze to dvd write function.

The adapter use a j micron chip set and i found that if it has difficulty to work with the ich10r that was well-known that year when j micron produced it gonna don't work.

Also to save you more time if u thought that u simple gonna pick an ide pci card and work reliably with a new chip-set u need to think it again. All new motherboards have a pci to pcie bridge from asmedia 1083 and dont work reliably with chip-sets pci to ide . Also the silicon image dont work in windows 10. (i dont know if they fix it wint windows update)

The only solution to use IDE devices reliably is to use pcie cards like jmb363 chip tha provide ide and 2 sata two sata 3 ports or a Marvell 9128 chip set that provide IDE and two sata 6 ports.

PATA to SATA is a headache and you are going to be dealing with inconsistencies. As cheap as SATA hardware is now, better to ditch the ancient PATA stuff.

I would say if it's not working, maybe it needs the molex connecting to the HDD as well as the floppy connector to the adaptor, can't see an IDE drive being powered through the data connection.

Correct. There is a Molex jumper that pulls power from the SATA power adapter, via the Molex pin header, to allow the PATA power on the elder hardware device that the OP wishes to try and use on newer hardware.
