IDE drive to SATA host

I an trying to reuse old IDE drives and DVD writers in a system that only has SATA on board. I bought two kinds of adaptor board for it but none of them works. Here are the two boards:

I've tried them on 2 PCs (B75 and Z97 chipset, both run Windows 10), 3 old IDE HDDs and 2 IDE DVD writers. I've tried all combinations of the above and none of them works. I even tried both SATA ports on the first board (red) just in case the label on it is wrong but neither of them works. The first board is "better" then the second one in the sense that BIOS and windows' device manager recognized the devices and showed their brand and model number, but disk management said that the HDD needs initialization. But when I initialize it, it said I/O device error. The second one didn't even appear in BIOS and any windows 10 functions.

If I only use one board then I would say I got a faulty card, but both not working indicate that it is not bad luck. Appreciate if any of you can tell me is there any setting or configuration that can make them work?

Is there a jumper on the IDE Drive which you can change to select it as a Master ( if that doesn't work then CS/Cabl Select ) ?

(Presumably you also connected the power cable for the IDE drive which is the old style molex).

Just a guess: these adapters require connection to power source; is your power cable (attached to white connector) ok? And I agree with das10 that IDE device has to be properly set as Master by jumper.

I use this adapter Axago RSI-X1 - Adapter | Alza.cz for connecting SATA DVD drive to IDE motherboard interface; unfortunately I have no direct experience using it in reverse order, but as can be seen at Reviews page, people say it works fine.

btw I do not understand why some sort of users is not able to reply directly to question asked but they have to express their unrelated opinions...

you're better off using an external adapter and connecting those IDE drives to a USB 3.0 port.

get something like a Ugreen USB 3.0 to Sata IDE adapter combo kit.

Better getting a PCI IDE card. Example: kenable 2 port ATA-133 PCI IDE RAID Card for 4 PATA: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics Don't have to set them up as raid.

I use one in a Linux box, old drives are great for trying out various OS's on.

Question: What is wrong with my adapters used for connecting internal ide hdd/dvd drives to sata mobo ports.

"Answers":
- Ide drives are slower and lower capacity (he knows), older drives tend to failure (not always true).
- Use usb external adapter (for internal drives, of course).
- Use pci add-on card (whether your mobo has pci port and whether it is free is irrelevant).
No answer to original question in all cases.

Do you really think this is normal? If yes then we are living in two different universes. I hope.

Addendum to post #4:

Make sure you use 80-conductor IDE cable, not 40-conductor one. And attach your IDE device using connector at the end of the cable, do not use connector in the middle.
