The MS genius stroke again, clobbered my hp desktop driver trying to fix an audio hick up, i suspect Windows Defender declared realtek driver as a threat so killed it. Did this happen to anyone? having similar BS from MS automatic trouble shooting? ending up with a deleted audio driver? Actually my core question is HOW effective is Windows 10 in automatically fixing any problem?
If, for example, you run the audio troubleshooter then it might well suggest deleting your audio driver & replacing it with an MS audio driver as a solution. If this is what you did then you might find, as I did & have many others have done, that your audio works well using the MS driver.
You can search this forum to see reports of problems others have had with RealTek drivers.
I have absolutely no idea why you mention Windows defender in your post. Similarly, I do not understand what has happened to make you moan about MS as you do; you do not explain what the symptoms were or what steps you took so I cannot comment.

Now stay with me here and TRY TRY TRY to read the following carefully :
1. In the midst of browsing , Windows defender kicked in.
2. Windows finished the scan.
3. Moments later I've noticed a red X on the speaker icon.
4. When I clicked on the red X icon , the automatic troubleshooter popped up and began ticking for ever.
At the end it announced : Could not fix the problem.
5. Frantically checked the Audio drivers list. my realtek driver disappeared.
As to your reply to my question concerning the effectiveness of MS troubleshooter, your guesswork does not count as an exact science answer: "A variable" ROFLMAOL .
Sometimes Windows Update looks for newer device drivers. It appears that your working audio drivers were "old", so Windows Update tried to replace them with newer Microsoft drivers (unfortunately without your consent). MS drivers are generic drivers with basic functionality and they are not always appropriate for a given hardware. When this happens the hardware doesn't work properly, or at all, as is your case. All you have to do is download latest Realtek HD audio drivers for Windows 10 and install it. In some rare cases the motherboard (or laptop/tablet) manufacturer might have done some customizations to the Realtek hardware and the official Realtek drivers do not work well. In this case download latest audio driver from motherboard (or laptop/tablet) manufacturer's site.
