I still have one working HP Laserjet 1200 at home (PCL5, PCL6, PS2). Pretty slow but still working. I think I have changed toner cartridge five or six times in almost 20 years. I have a Brother multifunction at work (WIFI) and it works quite fine. Only thing I dislike is the lack of supported languages (PCL6 and BR-Script [a cheapo PS implementation by Brother]). Right now running with PCL6. Only thing I don't like about Brother is output quality, specially when printing bitmaps.
One other thing: My brother in law had one HP Colour Laser printer and he had a lot of trouble when trying compatible toner. He did swap it for a Ricoh one and he is quite satisfied so far. Other thing I am afraid of is HP drivers bloatware.

To sum it ap: Laser forever. Inkjet is like meh for printing.

PS - Get PostScript 3 functionality if you can. Output quality is amazing.

I looked at many Printers to replace a very used/defective inkjet. I have a recording studio and do small CD duplicating services for my clients which includes color printer CD Jewel Case inserts. I looked at laser printers but most say the color isn't that good and it can't (or poorly) does pictures.

I settled on an HP Officejet Pro 8720 AIO machine. Its performed flawlessly and is very fast. I can do "regular" printing and also color jewel case inserts and photo quality inserts if the client asks for them. Like all inkjets the ink isn't cheap but with the Officejet the cartridges hold more ink and not too much more than "consumer" inkjets at warehouses such as Sam's Club or Costco.

I've been through other brands including Epson and Cannon and I've had better luck with HP.
