No sound. Realtek entry is missing from Device Manager

I have Asus ROG Trix with Win 10 Pro 64-bit, version 1803.

Yesterday at shutdown, I had sound from various sources - for example, YouTube. Today I have no sound from any source.

When I looked in Device Manager, the entry for Realtek has disappeared. That entry was present approximately one week ago when I disabled and re-enabled the driver to cure no sound in YouTube.

    Any advice?

    Thanks.

    Hi OldGrantonian,

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the sound card driver?

    Thanks for response.

All the google results say that you must uninstall before re-installing. I immediately opened Device Manager to find out out to uninstall something that's not present. No luck.

Maybe I can install a driver by clicking on a file. Is it

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Realtek\Realtek Windows\NIC DriverRTINSTALLER64.EXE

    Thanks.

You can download new version of the sound card driver from your computer manufacturer website or sound card manufacturer website.

I ran the DDU in accordance with the ReadMe. Nothing visible happened. There's still a red "x" in system tray.

As I suggested in my second post, it's really difficult for a non-techie such as myself to understand how any program such as DDU can have the intelligence to clean something WHICH DOES NOT EXIST. See my screenshot. There's no entry for "Realtek something-or-other" which I'm sure was present about a week ago. I was able to Disable, then Enable the Realtek driver to successfully restore YouTube sound.

On the other hand, I'm sure that DDU can examine the entry for "Intel Display Audio" (screen shot), and determine whether it's OK or not, because it EXISTS.

    Thanks.

Intel display audio is thru graphic part, DP or HDMI, it's digital. For analog sound it has "Support Windows 10 Cortana with Voice, ASUS Sonic Studio according to specs.

Is the device hidden? Look under hidden devices (file?)
There’s a bug either with 1809 or the latest cu, it’s deleting/hiding the audio driver, there’s reports that the error is referring to intel Audio driver & it’s actually the realtek driver which require updating or reinstalling.
Check further up for audio devices too.

My sound is now back to normal:

Here's a brief summary of all my actions:

    • None.

I wasn't offered any Windows updates, but I notice an unsolicited update for yesterday so maybe that fixed everything:

Thanks to all volunteers for their assistance and advice.
