H P Deskjet Printer will not install. Error 3

My daughter has a Laptop which has a Windows 10 Pro O/S. It seems to have all the updates. Her printer, which she has had for over a year, is a HP Deskjet 3630 Series. Recently the printer stopped printing from the laptop. I have made several attempts to reinstall the printer with the laptop, using both the original installation disk and the HP printer installation website, all to no avail.

When I attempt to reinstall the printer the following messages pop up at different points in the printer installation process.
    1. Installation Error 3: Failed to copy Port Monitor files.
2.: HP DJ3630 Series Printer Driver is not compatible with policy enabled on your computer that blocks NT 4.0
3:Windows can't install the HP Deskjet 3630 Series kernel mode printer driver. To obtain a driver that is compatible with the version of Windows you are running contact the manufacturer.

I can only guess that a recent Windows 10 update has fouled things up but as my daughter prints from Windows very infrequently I have no idea which Windows update might have done the damage. The printer will still scan and it will print from an iPad.

I would be grateful for a solution to this problem.

    Hi gordon99

Did your daughter update to 1809?

If so you are the second thread that I have seen where an HP printer won't install. Other member went back to 1803.

I would ensure you have all personal data backed up and then I would fallback to 1803.

Ken, the laptop has not been updated to 1809, not yet anyway. From what I read this problem seems to occur often with HP printers.

Yes I've experienced myself a few times where printer just vanishes, one device I just replaced and that ended the problem for that one client. Now I could always uninstall and re-install.

Found two articles, funny one was for 3630

Please note later in thread where HP suggested installing software with printer off until it asks for printer. Prevents windows from loading its stuff.

This next article I've seen in different pieces but it appears that even when we uninstall all drivers are not removed. I wish every vendor make a cleaner for their product.

Find the installer in File Explorer, right-click it and select "Troubleshoot Compatibility".

    Hello Ken & Ben,
I live about 200 miles from my daughter. I was with her last week and spent many hours doing uninstalls and re-installs of the printer, following instructions I had read, but got nowhere. I am also corresponding with HP Community Forum and I am receiving similar advice as I am getting here. I shall have to use Team Viewer to take remote control of my daughter's laptop and try out your suggestions. I will report back how I get on but it may be a day or two. Regards, gordon99

No problem. Team Viewer is great

Look into Macrium Reflect... simply restore an older working version.

HP really has to rethink their install or should be developing a "Cleaning" tool.

Let us know how it goes and good luck.

Ken, I am relieved to be able to say I have managed to restore the laptop to printer printing facility by following the guidelines from "shomiL" in your link https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printe...r/td-p/6237925. I fully removed the printer software first before starting mods in the registry files. Having done all of that the reinstall of the printer software was quick and easy. However, when I had completed all of that my daughter complained that her email client (eM Client) had disappeared. I have no idea why that should have happened. The program was missing from C\ Programs though the data files etc. were present in C:\ Users\ xxxxxx. I had to download and install the program and then it was back fully functional.
Thanks very much for your help.

    Glad you got it sorted.

I wish every vendor was responsible to produce a cleaner. You should not need to be an IT developer / technician to install a printer.

Thanks for posting your fix, it will help others.
