sound works only when screen in sleep mode on new hp elitedesk 800 G3

    hello,
I have a new hp elitedesk 800 g3 and hp n270 monitor, no external speakers. I have no sound and was told that I need to purchase external speakers. but suddenly I hear sound coming from my machine while in sleep mode: a youtube lecture that I had open in a tab apparently was activated somehow was playing and the sound was clearly audible. when I wake up the computer, the video is playing with no sound. anyone know why this is happening and how to fix the sound?

    Hi nendy

It appears you really don't have sound per say but I did see in specs you an Internal speaker. This would be really basic. You do have a line-out in rear and with an inexpensive set of computer speakers would have a better experience.

That said, if you right right the Windows Speaker Icon in Notification area, then Sound Settings.

Under the choose output device what is listed?

Over on right is Sound Control Panel as a link, please click. In the panel that opens what is available and what is set as default

Easier to post a screen shot.

whatever basic speaker i have is sufficient. i just need to be able to control it, and it should not work just in sleep mode. this is what i seesound works only when screen in sleep mode on new hp elitedesk 800 G3-speaker-sleep.pngsound works only when screen in sleep mode on new hp elitedesk 800 G3-speaker-sleep2.png
there are actually 2 sound possibilities - one from the display (HP N270c Display Audio) and the other i guess from the desktop - speaker (Conextant HD Audio).
    Thanks!

    Right.

Now if you click the Sound Control Panel on right can you post a screen shot.

Notice at the bottom of the page you posted, other sound options, open that and have a look.

    here's the screen shot, please.
BTW, something I did last week caused the speakers to work, but I am not comfortable until I know how to turn the sound on and off at will.
    Thank you.

Interest... and maybe just bad timing.

There was an update pushed last week which was supposed to fix / prepare Intel Display audio for 1809 as I understood it. It clobbered a bunch of devices and there were all kinds of sound problems reported on all kinds of systems running 1709, 1803 and 1809.

They then push this to fix it.

    KB4468550 Intel audio driver Update for Windows 10 1709, 1803, 1809

See if you have this update and when was it installed. From your screen shot I see you have Intel Display Audio. It appears as it is set for your default communications device. Does that screen have any speakers or a Mic?

if you will tell me where to find this update and its install date, I can check that for you. (I am dabbling in unfamiliar waters.)
regarding whether the screen has speakers or a mic - not sure. looking at the specs
    HP N270c 27-inch Curved Monitor - Specifications | HP® Customer Support
tells me that it has (1) audio output - no mention of speakers / mic. I am dumb here.

    Not at all.

I have a screen with Audio out as well. My assumption is sound is carried on HDMI cable and then I can plug in a set of speakers or headphones into the jack.

    To look for update

Start > Settings > Updated and Security > View Update history (on right hand side)
