No USB ports working on toshiba laptop

    Hi guys,

Got an old Toshiba laptop, satellite l500d pslk0a-00r009
Its old and doesn't officially support win10. However I have it installed and everything works fine except USB. All the ports seem completely dead, plugging in a USB mouse I get no light on the mouse. USB flash drives don't work either. This was previously working under win7.

The issue seems to be I don't have "Generic USB hub" in device manager. Have tried to manually install it using add legacy hardware but it wont take. I have several USB root hub and others listed, but not the generic hub.

Here's what I have tried so far:

Uninstall all USB device in device managers and reboot
    Confirmed BIOS is latest version
tried both legacy and compatibly USB mode in BIOS
Download and install generic win10 USB drivers
    Disable USB power saving mode
Installed toshiba's service center, no updates available
    Ran MS troubleshooter/fixit

I think the next step is to give up, but does anyone else have any suggestions?

    thanks

    1) Open the bios and turn off secure boot:
Enable or Disable Secure Boot on Windows 10 PC | Windows 10 Tutorials

If there is fast boot or ultrafast boot also turn them off:
Enable or Disable Fast Boot in UEFI Firmware Settings for Windows | Windows 10 Tutorials

    2) Create a bootable Ubuntu flash drive:
Create a bootable USB stick on Windows | Ubuntu tutorials

    3) See if you can boot to the Ubuntu flash drive:

List of PC brands with their corresponding hot-keys

    4) Try all USB ports: USB3 and USB2
    5) Try multiple flash drives
    6) In the BIOS try legacy versus UEFI and UEFI with and without CSM

    7) Attempt to boot using Memtest86+ version 5.01
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

Boot from USB Drive on Windows 10 PC | Windows 10 Tutorials

    8) Open device manager > click view > show hidden devices > manually expand all rows > look for any row displaying a yellow triangle with black exclamation mark or unknown device > post images into the thread

Hi thanks for your reply, have added some notes against your suggestions:

    1) Open the bios and turn off secure boot- This PC does not support UEFI boot therefore no option in the bios for this2) Create a bootable Ubuntu flash drive- this PC does not support booting off USB, however I have booted into linux using a live CD, USB does not in that either4) Try all USB ports: USB3 and USB2There are only 2 ports, both only support USB2.0 both do not work5) Try multiple flash drivesall fail8) Open device manager > click view > show hidden devices > manually expand all rows > look for any row displaying a yellow triangle with black exclamation mark or unknown device > post images into the thread- no devices with exclamation marks in the device manager

    1) Open the website for the computer manufacturer > support > enter the product or serial number or model > select the operating system > view drivers > post a URL or hyperlink into the thread

    2) Update the specs in the "My Computer" section:

System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums | Windows 10 Tutorials
In the left corner below in your post you find 'My System Specs'.
After clicking it you can find a link a little below that says 'Update your System Spec', click on this link to get to the page where you can fill in your system specs.
System Info - See Your System Specs - Windows 7 Help Forums

Include PSU. cooler, case, peripherals and anything attached to the computer by wired or wireless (mouse, keyboard, headset, printer, xbox, USB wireless network card, etc.)

    3) There are two log collectors: DM and BETA
Run the beta log collector near the bottom of this web page:

this PC does not support booting off USB
It probably will if you install Plop bootmanager.

Have you tried installing the usb drivers that worked under win7?

the drivers page is here: Support – Business PCs - Toshiba

Have installed the usb driver listed for win7 and win8.1 uninstalled all my USB devices, and rebooted, but still no good.

Im positive its due to generic USB hub not being present in device manager.

These were some of the problems reported in the logs:
    corruption
    startup repair failure
    drive bad block
    bsod

The bugchecks in the logs were:
    10D
    0x124

The WHEA 0x124 bugcheck is frequently related to malfunctioning hardware.

    1) Open file explorer > this PC >C: > in the right upper corner search for:
    a) win32k.sys-20180708-0014.dmp
    b) C:\windows\memory.dmp

    2) zip each file > post share links into the thread using one drive, drop box, or google drive

    3) Check the computer bios to see if there are any on board hardware diagnostic tests.

    4) post the website and computer model/product number/serial number so that drivers and bios can be viewed

    5) See if you can test RAM/DIMM/Motherboard with any of these steps:
    a) Memtest86+ version 5.01
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
    b) Memtest86
MemTest86 - Official Site of the x86 Memory Testing Tool
    c) Windows memory diagnostics (the above two tests are preferred)

    6) Run HD Tune (free edition)
    https://www.hdtune.com/
Post images of the test results for these tabs:
    a) Health (SMART)
    b) Benchmark
    c) Full error scan

    7) Sea Tools for Windows
    https://www.seagate.com/support/down...ls-win-master/
    long generic test

    8) Open admininstrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    9) sfc /scannow
    10) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    11) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    12) chkdsk /r /v
Run this command on all partitions using the syntax: chkdsk /r /v C: or chkdsk /r /v D: changing the drive letter to the applicable partition
This may take many hours so plan to run overnight

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>chkdsk /r /v
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

    Type: Y
    reboot

    13) Use the txt and images in this thread to find the chkdsk reports in the event viewer > copy and paste > notepad > post share links into the thread using one drive, drop box, or google drive

    hello:

    1) Open file explorer > this PC >C: > in the right upper corner search for:
    a) win32k.sys-20180708-0014.dmp

no file found (note the timestamp of this file in the log message was 3 months ago)

    b) C:\windows\memory.dmp

    attached: Uploadfiles.io - MEMORY.7z

    4) post the website and computer model/product number/serial number so that drivers and bios can be viewed

Support – Business PCs - Toshiba
    satellite l500d pslk0a-00r009

    6) Run HD Tune (free edition)

Not concerned about hdd or memory bad blocks (pc this age I am sure there will be, but this wont be stopping my usb ports from working)

    9) sfc /scannow
"did not find any integrity violations"

    10) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    "No component store corruption detected"

    thanks
