    USB devices stop W10 startup

My complacency was shattered with Microsoft's last major updates all of which I've removed from my machine to restore some semblance of normality. I rue the day that I ever installed Update 1703 & 1709.Big Mistake. Compounded by my stupidity in putting up 1803. But I've learned my lesson. No more Updates, fixed in the Registry..Enough ranting.

Now I'm left with a Windows 10 machine that will NOT boot up with any USB3 device installed/attached.Yes I've tried every USB setting in BIOS known to man. ( ASRock Z97 Extreme6 Bios 2.30).

Every time I do try to start the machine with Logitech Wireless Mouse & Keyboard connected via Unify Receiver it gets to the Windows Startup Manager and disables both mouse & keyboard. No. I cannot boot into Safe Mode.

I have to physically remove the wireless receiver, mouse & keyboard and replace the same with wired mouse & keyboard; its just like the 1990s. The machine starts and responds to wired mouse clicks & wired keyboard strokes. If I then put up the wireless logitech mouse & keyboard, and pull the wired, the wireless both work fine until the next reboot. Likewise, I can connect any USB3 or USB2 device AFTER boot up, they are seen and work fine. Any machine start/restart destabilised that machine so it will not reboot until all USB3 devices removed and wired keyboard/mouse are connected.

I believe the culprit is the Universal Serial Bus Connector. Particularly, the Renesas USB 3.0 Driver, I also am concerned at the MS version of USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller 1.0. I've uninstalled, disabled and sworn at them both. No change.

Have I missed something blindingly obvious ?
Has anyone got a fix ?Is this my fault for upgrading from W7 and not doing a clean install ?
Do I bite the bullet, buy an Adata NVME PCIe SSD and reinstall W10 & applications to hope the problem goes away ?

    Thanks for reading

    Hi Muppet.

So when did this start... and what changes were made just prior to.

As you likely know Windows updates drivers without our involvement, is it possible a driver was updated recently.

I don't believe this has anything to do with your upgrade path. I have machines that were upgrade on the same path running 1803 without issue.

Obviously your aren't happy with Windows 10. That I can't resolve.

Might I suggest something like DriverStore to ensure all USB drivers are removed and then you reapply the manufacturer drivers.

Don't know what if any changes you've made to BIOS, I would reload defaults unless you have specific customization required for OC'ing or such.

Your version of 1709 will be supported until April 2019. A clean install with a new release could prove useful. Making changes to the registry is one approach but you open yourself up to issues when MS changes things in the monthly updates. Of course this is your machine and you call the shots.

I ran into a similar issue with a client's computer and the boot process was halted by the BIOS looking for boot files on a mapping program's DVD he had left in the drive, ejected it and things got to working as they should. Have seen the problem with USB drives, probably due to settings for boot devices in the BIOS.

    Thanks Guys.
It can only be the BIOS.

    I'll 2x check my settings.

Check the boot order. Make sure that USB is after the HDD.
