    SIW2 said:
It looks like there was linux on there previously.

If it was running windows 7, you would want to recover the correct ntfs partition, not the ext partitions.
You can ignore those small ones marked boot.

I would be tempted to tick only the partition NTFS 465.71gb. If it doesn't boot after recovery, check it is marked Active and run startup repair from boot media up to 3 times.

    @SIW2, thanks.

Going back to what jumanji said it is likely only the first partition, the 931.5 NFTS. He said add up the partitions that equal the size of the drive, post 11.

This conflicts with what SIW2 just posted.

It says no OS because the disk is so messed up. I bet the System Reserved partition is the third one down, 100MB

I like Bree's idea to look. So you would double click on that partition and then if it opens look in the root for the Users folder.

There is something strange about this being Linux / Windows.

If you can't load Win 7 (no key) I believe you could load Win 10. Without a license you can't personalize but who cares if this drives equipment. Of course you would have to confirm she has copies of the necessary programs AND they work in Windows 10

This also may help y'all. It is a Dell Inspiron n7110 laptop. I have read online from numerous people, that these computers have hard drives that tend to fail. It has a Seagate hard drive. I like Western Digital, preferably.

Before recovering that ntfs partition, Dble click on it to see what files/folders it contains. The used sizes reported are strange.

Thanks Jesse but I think the tool shows what is usable for a 1TB drive, the 931.5. If this is an older device the HDD is very accessible.

You maybe be able to get Dell to help with getting license key and even a copy of the recovery software to freshly install Win 7.

I think the real issue is her data.

I won't profess to being an expert but I will go back to Bree's idea.

Look in the partition I identified and the one SIW2 identified. (just posted the same).

Which one has the USER folders.

Would Linux be related to whatever was running the embroidery machine? May be an idea to check with the owner just what software was being used as well as check if it really was running Win7 and not Linux to run the Embroidery software?

On checking there are a few Linux programs as well as a lot of Windows ones.

Or, has someone else had a go a trying to fix it possibly trying to use Linux?

@Caledon Ken, what do you mean by the hard drive being very accessible? I’ve contacted Dell, and they won’t help. They said it’s out of warranty, and she or I would have to pay for the recovery software and everything else which I find rather dumb. I don’t know why these manufacturers make you pay for software when it is needed when Microsoft gave us Windows 10 for free.

Newer laptops have the HDD or SSD buried in device. You literally have to rip apart to get drive. Older laptops have a small hatch on base, two screws for cover, two screws for drive and it is in your hand.

Hp charges for recovery software too but at $10 I thought, wow, cheap.

I think the real issue is either the stores or the buyers. Call it dealer prep.

The store as part of setup should be creating recovery software or the buyer should. Maybe its more a training course for users. What am I going to need to protect my asset. The key, bootable media, backups. Can't help but think of Macrium.

Anyway that is water long under the bridge. Lets confirm what size drive is on device. Then explore those two possible NFTS partitions. I also like clam1952 suggestion... ask user what the different machines need in the way of OS's.

I installed a Linux utility trying to fix the partitions. But I don’t remember installing Linux. The utility I downloaded said it also worked with Windows. As far as checking the drive details, I am letting it scan again. It froze up and wouldn’t do anything. We shall see what it finds after this scan. However, it couldn’t pull up any data when I tried to access it. It did yesterday, however. Would that be because it was set to GPT instead of MBR?

You have to use that tool that you are scanning with to look in partition.

    Is this a 1TB drive or a 500GB drive.
