    Sure, Jesse.

After you have added a new hard drive, install windows 7 ( it needs to be the same edition she had before - Home Premium or Professional, or whatever she had ). Skip entering the product key, and untick "automatically activate when online".

After win 7 has completed installation, > this little program .<

It is described in para 3 of this link

    ^ Way to go .

(I still have my DELL Inspiron's backup taken with two programs mentioned in the link. But these became redundant after I got the DELL Reinstallation DVD from them.)

So I talked with my cousin who is the owner of the computer, and she said that if there is that much wrong with it, then she will just purchase a new computer. I on the other hand would love to fix it and upgrade it to Windows 10. I am computer smart, but when it comes to partitions, I leave that well alone. All I mainly deal with on a computer is fixing viruses when Windows is bootable, installing software, or new updates. I can't afford to take it to someone who can fix it who is a technician. Therefore, I am willing to fix it by the guiding hands of Jesus and the forums to get this thing going again. I just think it has a corrupted partition table which can be recovered. If Windows was gone, then why would WIndows still show up in CMD?

Sure the forum would like to help. Getting mixed messages, I think.

Didn't Dell diagnostics tell you drive was bad?

In post #88 I provided link to Seagate drive tool. Did it report good health on drive?

@Caledon Ken, I ran the tool the other day and it said that the shortest drive was bad or something like that. I am not sure what that means, but I am happy to run it again and tell you what comes up.

Edit: Yes, Dell Diagnostics did say that. But it didn't say the whole drive was.

    Sorry Jesse.

A bad drive is a bad drive and it needs to be replaced. When the tools report bad you can't say don't use this portion. (Yes if a sector is bad it can be marked for exclusion, but this is not your case.)

Depending on what you want to do with the computer you can get replacement drives at a very reasonable price.

You can likely find another old laptop and swap drives. Put a notice up that your are looking for old laptop. People put old laptops in cupboards everyday.

    Lets see what others think.
