    Sound driver not working build 1803


    Hi

    My sister has been using Windows 10 (1709 ) with not no issues so far. We noticed that the old hard drive was dying so she bought an SSD and she asked me to install it, so I did a fresh install of Windows 10 (1803). The problem the problem Im facing now is that I have no sound . I instaled the drivers that are avaliable on the web site of the motherboard (ECS H81H3-M4), The installation runs smooth, I reboot the PC but still no sound, I have installed multiple driver versions of the sound driver and still no luck.

    The last thing I tried was to plug my old Hard drive (SATA II 7200rpm) and to my surpries the sound worked fine!!!. The only diference was the that hard drive has an older version of Windows 10 (build 1709).

    PC specs :
    Motherboard : ECS H81H3-M4
    CPU : intel core i3 4160
    RAM : 8gb dd3 ADATA 1600mhz
    SSD : ADATA su650 (no sound with win10 1803)
    HD : Matrox 160gb SATAII 7200rpm (sound works with win10 1709)
    PSU : Thermaltake TR2 600w

    Any help would be apreciated

    The web site for the motherboard lists Win 10 drivers.
    Install the Intel (motherboard) Chipset driver, restart Windows and then the VIA driver and see if that helps.

    I have mentioned something similar before here : On buying new or used Laptop / PC beware of Conexant chips , you see windows is trying to legacy some audio hardware , chips where manufacturers don't update their drivers frequently , might well be left behind as a non windows 1803 compatible hardware and you might be either stuck : trying to uninstall the driver , block drivers from updating , then live with the generic high definition audio driver windows will install (Windows 10 Pro version only) and/or worse , roll back to 1709 and hide update 1803 and save yourself the headache but expect to run out of security updates in a year (Life span of release 1709 is 2 years) .

    I have googled Via and surprisingly no drivers had been released past 2015 , now either Via has to release an updated driver or you are stuck with earlier options , you can still try googling moded Via high definition audio drivers or drivers from different manufacturers at your own risk though .

    If your mobo was the Realtek version then you are better off , Realtek had updated their audio driver you might just want to download the latest from their official center or from the sticky post on this forum .

    One final suggestion would be to try to install the driver you have after setting the extracted setup file to backward compatibility windows 8 see if it works (it has for some) .

    I was going to mention the hardware "obsolesecnce" but thought the chipset driver was worth a try. I've seen some posts on the Dell forum of some older hardware systems that will not upgrade to 1803 (not offered by the Windows update).

    As nIGHTmAYOR said, if can't find working drivers, try installing the driver in Compatibility mode. In case you need to know how to do that, see this link, under "Using Compatibility Mode to Resolve Driver problems".
