mousepad not working after windows 10 install

    Hi.

i have just installed Windows 10 pro 64 bit to an acer aspire E15 laptop (it had Windows 8.1). now the mouse pad doesnt work. ive re downloaded the drivers and installed to no avail, and it also seems to be different (it has the cortana search bar which disappeared on my main system quite some time ago, but i digress) despite being the same OS, which should be irrelevant.

How do i get the mousepad working as its not my own laptop, im just doing the upgrade! all help greatfully accepted, before i have to take it to someone else to get the issue sorted. im trying to learn about such things as i go (im sure we ALL had to learn somehow).

    Thanks

    Hi, welcome to tenforums.

What does Device Manager tell you about the touchpad? Yellow triangle? Is there a driver installed? If so, what version?
Is the touchpad disabled in some manner? (Some laptops used to have a physical switch; there's an option to disable the touchpad if an external mouse is connected).

What happens if you 'Scan for hardware changes' or 'Update driver' there?

Does the touchpad work if you boot to Safe Mode and disconnect any external mouse?

And does it work if you boot to the BIOS?

Was the touchpad working in Win 8?
Did you clean install or upgrade?
What is the exact model of your laptop?

mousepad worked perfectly in windows 8.1. device manager doesnt recognise the mousepad is there. i have reinstalled the driver, no idea what version. ive tried the mousepad switch (fn and f7) and that made no difference. it doesnt work even in the bois, i have to use an external mouse. the upgrade was supposed to be a clean install. had to do it online as the boot from USB stick seems to be security locked and i cant unlock it. model is an acer aspire es1-512-c50s. as for boot in safe mode, i havent found that option in the bios.

EDIT: every single guide and how to on this issue ive seen online says to switch the mouse setting in the bios to basic, which is what i had done. ive been back in and switched it to advanced, which is default in the bios on this machine, and it works again. thanks for the help.

EDIT 2: after a restart its stopped working again. HELP!!!

Hi, the easy bit just for reference (it won't help with the touch pad given what you say)

    - offers no touchpad driver, curiously.

    From the tutorial section, try:
Sign in User Account Automatically at Windows 10 Startup | Windows 10 Tutorials

    Touchpad: I think you know:

ACER ES1-512-c5yw touch pad not working after recent last two - Microsoft Community

It would also be wise to make sure you have the latest BIOS version available.

If your PC isn't approved by ACER to support Win 10, formally there's no guarantee of full operation, and in particular even if it works now, it may not in some respect after some future feature update (upgrade).

thanks. neither of those seems to work though as it brings up 2 identical user account names when i disable using method 1 and method 2 i didnt set up a password as such, it was a simple pin code which also doesnt work. im going to try to reinstall using a local account rather than a microsoft account and see if that helps, as having looked, that is how my own machine is set up. ive NEVER had to sign in using my own laptop!

Windows 10 is different, as you'll appreciate. By default, signing in is required.

You may find something helpful if you read through comments following the tutorial.
If stuck, I suggest you post a question there.

There are tutorials on PINS too, with comments following referring to PIN in Win 8.

See list of tutorials at the end for more.
