2.5" 512GB SATA III V-NAND 2-bit MLC Internal Solid for Thinkpad P51
Unless I am overlooking something these specs seem to be about the best that you can do after looking at a few different manufacturers if I want to replace the 7200 rpm HDD platter that came with the machine:
SATA III SSD
Max Sequential Read Up to 560 MBps Max Sequential Write Up to 530 MBps
Is this about right? The 256GB SSD PCIe MLC OPAL2 that also came with the machine screams but it does not seem that anything comes close to this when it comes to replacing the platter with a SATA III SSD. TIA.

Yes, that’s about the maximum theoretical throughput of a SATA III SSD.
Any 7mm 2.5" SSD should work in the 2.5" slot on the Lenovo P51.
Once upon a time, you could put a PCIe M.2 drive in the 2.5" drive bay of the P50/P51. It requires that you buy the right parts to do it and unlike your fixed M.2 slot at 4x PCIe lanes, the 2.5" drive bay only provides 2x PCIe lanes. That's still about 3 times faster than a SATA SSD.
Lenovo P series forum is good for P51 information:

Yeah, that's the conclusion I also came to. Thanks.

I thought that you could still do that if as you mentioned you get the correct adapters and brackets. Fortunately that is something I do not have a need or desire to do. I still have an extra pcie m.2 slot open : )

Copy that. That one I knew!

I don't normally go there. My first thought is r/thinkpad/ and r/Lenovo/

You're right, I should have looked before I spoke from memory. I thought only the P71 had two 2280 SSDs. It is the T470 that needs the caddy to support 2x 2280 SSDs.
If you want something that comes close to PCIe SSD's speed then why not use a second PCIe SSD in the second slot?
