OK, I am still mulling over it, especially after seeing the PW screenshot where it shows File Type "Other". Just relax till I work out my strategy and return. In the meantime just tell me how many partitions you had in that disk and also the type of data in it.

I never partitioned it, so it is how it was when it was new. It is full of TV shows only. The vast majority are .mkv files. It is 11 pm here in New Zealand and I am off to bed, so I won't see further postings from you until tomorrow. Good Night. :)

In two hours from now, your Sun may rise but I may be asleep. So you will have ample time to do the following. I shall return when it is 8 AM here and may be 1:30PM for you.

Just do this: Your Partition Wizard screenshot

Why am I seeing a 1TB (931.53GB) GPT disk? If it is not an internal drive, safely remove it and keep it aside.

The disk we will be tackling now is the 2TB (1.82TB) Seagate HDD Disk3 E: drive. showing as (Other). Right?

Now right click on that drive in PW > Properties > Partition Info. Please show me that window.

I made my 500GB Seagate external with some 7GB mkv files show as "Other". It looks like this:

How I made that NTFS partition into "Other" is irrelevant for now. I know I can reverse it. Whether it is reversible so easily in your case is what I am exploring now.

EDIT: Just one more thing to do which I forgot.

In PW , right click on that "Other" partition > Change Partition Type ID and show me the window. (Do not make any change. Just show me that Window and then close it)

My Laptop has an SSD for the OS and a 1TB (931.53GB) GPT disk mechanical drive as well.

Yes, this is the one we are working on: "2TB (1.82TB) Seagate HDD Disk3 E: drive. showing as (Other)."

    Here is the Properties Capture:

Your screenshots match exactly with that of my manipulated trial HDD except for the fact that your HDD is quite an old one with the first Volume Boot Sector starting at sector 63 ( instead of the now standard sector 2048.)

    Now

    Launch
PartitionWizard. On the left Pane click on PartitionRecoveryWizard > Next > Select your faulty Drive > Next > Full Disk > Next > QuickScan > Next. Allow the quick scan to complete. At the end of the quickscan you will get a window showing all the found partitions Post a screenshot of it ( only that Window. No need of any background). After you have taken the screenshot click on Cancel button on that Window and close PW. You can run it again if need be.

That is the standard instructions. But in your case I will cut it short. As soon as Quick Scan starts, you may find a Found Partition Window showing a partition. If that happens, cancel it by clicking on the "Cancel" button next to the scan progress field ,take a screenshot of the new Window that pops up and post a screenshot of that Window only. Click on the Cancel button at the bottom of that Window and quit PW

Started Quick Scan. Here is the window. Is this the "Found Partition Window" you speak of (it shows something in the centre field)?

The scan is at 3% now. Will take a while.

No need to continue the scan. Click on the Cancel button and in the ensuing Window click on Cancel and close PW. We are done with Partition Wizard.

The partition is existing and not lost as you can see Status: Existing.

OK, I have a funeral to attend that has come up all of a sudden and may be off for the rest of the day after another hour.

Our session may last for the next few days. That is always the case in data recovery excercise. So don't lose patience.

    Now do this:
I want to see what is in sector 0 and sector 63 of your faulty drive. If your system is 32bit, download x86 version of bootice. If 64bit x64 version

Using bootice: Lost partitions! Solved - Windows 7 Help Forums ( Download link is available in this post)

You need not save anything, Just go to sector 0 ( select your faulty drive, click on Sector Edit and it will by default open Sector 0 map. Take a screenshot. Click on the Sector Field and in the Window that opens type 63, OK and you will be on sector 63. Take a screenshot. Close bootice.

Post the screenshots. May be I will see it tonight after my return from the adjoining village.

The bootice website will be in Chinese. Don't worry. The download links are in that page and the downloaded program will run in English.

I will be off this laptop in 3 hours as I need an early night, as I will be travelling tomorrow to a city 100 Klms away. It will be 24 hours before I am back online. I will try to do the test & post before I go to bed.

    I appreciate your continued help.

My sympathy for the loss to you, of a person you knew.
