    Hard Drive Platter Firmware Updating

    Has anybody heard of this?

Why would there be a need for such?

How does one update a platter? In or out of Windows 10?

Platter firmware? No. Meaningless, as far as I know.

    Hard drive controller firmware? Sure.

The software to update a HD's fimware is specific to each manufacturer. Example: https://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx?lang=en "WD Universal Firmware Updater for Windows". Only lists support through Windows 8.1, but I suppose that it'd run under 10 as well.

It is possible to update the firmware in a HDD. That would be for the control software, low level formatting etc.
Doubt if you will ever need to do it for an HDD.

The platters are just a disc with coatings on to store the data.

The following article is what stimulated my question.

I found it in trying to sort out the pcb firmware options, history of updates, etc

It would seem to me that such fiddling would only be needed in very rare cases?

Normally updating HDD or DVD firmware is done by running a .exe file from the supplier in Windows.
