Canoscan scanner 4200f OK on Win7 now no driver for Win 10

    Hello guys.

I just came here from the excellent Win7 forums, where I've been for ages. A very happy customer.

I recently upgraded from Win 7 ultimate to Win 10 pro via the free Microsoft upgrade. All went amazingly well with all my files and folders intact.

The only problem is that I have an expensive Canon canoscan 4200f scanner. Perfect on Win 7 64 bit but no driver for Win 10. I normally use Vuescan, which lists my model as being supported, but Vuescan (Hamrick) say I have to have the Canon driver first. Canon say:
Canon will not issue drivers for this model to support the Windows 10 operating system. The Windows 7 drivers should function in the Windows 10 environment with some limitations which are currently unknown to Canon.
I have tried using the Canon driver as is, and in compatibility mode but no good.
Device manager shows the scanner but also shows no driver listed.
Vuescan just can't "see" a usb scanner, so does nothing.
    Help, please.

I've seen a few times where the software for a scanner didn't seem to work but in the Start, W section, Windows Accessories and the Windows Fax and Scan did work.

The software for Win7 or Win8/8.1 may work but it needs to be the same 'bitness' as the Operating System, i.e. 32-bit on 32-bit or 64-bit on 64-bit.

    Thanks,
I've just tried that but Win Fax and Scan doesn't detect the scanner.
    I'm still stuck.

I had a very similarly specced HP scanner of the same age.
That had to go after Windows 8.1/10, no driver. Whilst you could use it with Vuescan the cost of that fully featured amounted to almost as much as a new scanner so that was it, off to recycle.

    I already bought Vuescan Pro.
If I connect the canoscan, Vuescan says no usb scanner is detected, and Hamrick software, who make Vuescan, say i need a Canon driver first.

A suggestion from the top of my head (I also own a Canon scanner (LiDE)). If you are using modern hardware with USB3 ports and Intel chipset, try using an USB2 port (if available) or enter BIOS and configure XHCI to manual mode (there is also a smart mode, but it doesn't work 100%). Canon scanners can be quite picky and their software support is awful to say the least.

I'll try that, but my computers are both Dell Optiplex 9010 and I use the same usb2 and usb3 ports I did with Win 7 perfectly.

The computer sees the scanner, but device manager shows no driver installed.

Right-click the scanner in Device Manager, select "Update driver", "Browse my computer for driver software", then "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer". If one is found, install it. You may have to restart the computer for the change to take effect.

    I've tried that already.
I tell it where the driver (for Win 7) is, try to install it and it tells me it hasn't installed properly.
If I click on the driver folder properties, I can select compatibility modes and tried Win 7, Win 8 and Win 8.1 (all the latest in the list) but again, it won't install.
Canon don't have a Win 10 driver. Would I get something similar elsewhere?

I was also wondering whether I could rename the scanner to a later but similar model and then use the driver for that. How could I change the device model name?

Don't browse to the folder, just select "Browse my computer for driver software", then "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer".
