RAW Format | Windows 10 Codex

I am migrating CD's to an archive drive, mainly using Robocopy.

In such a move three produced "cyclic redundancy error."

That led me to chkdsk. That led "CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives."

Can someone suggest a simple and direct and easy way to add the needed codex / codexes that will enable Window 10 to read RAW files?

    A work-around?

I think each disk contains only pictures. I do not recall ever making audio recording in that epoch *ca. XP/ Vista) but I may have? Mm. They be early movie files?

    Thanks for any thoughts.

"Raw" in this context means that the disks aren't recognized as formatted (NTFS, FAT32, etc.) No codec will help you with that.

Maybe this will: https://www.easeus.com/resource/chkdsk-reports-raw.htm I've never used it, and I can't even tell you whether it's free, shareware, or commercial.

Does Robocopy only give the CRC error on certain files? That is, can Robocopy copy some files from the bad discs but then error out when it hits a certain point?

Chkdsk does not work on the ISO9660 filesystem, which most CDs use. It just doesn't give a very good error message when it encounters an unsupported filesystem. Even if it did work with ISO9660 there's nothing you can do about it since you can't write to the CD.

It been a few days since I have looked at this.

I am recalling that it kicked the whole disk.

Any hope for a fix in Windows?

I found a set of tools for working with RAW files in Linux.

If there is no solution in Windows I will try them.

Interesting that there are two sense of the term in digital media.

My mind immediately turned to the photographic sense because one of the CD's is full of pictures.

I recommend you trying TestDisk, but it may be somewhat hard to get started with it.

If the cd/dvd is showing as "Raw", you may be able to recover files from it using a CD/DVD Recovery program. One such program is Isobuster ( Recover Files Data from CD, DVD, Hard Drive, USB, SD with IsoBuster! which is not free but supposed to be very good ), or you can try a free one such as "CD Recovery Toolbox" ( How to repair CD/DVD/Blu-Ray data from scratch disk? ).
