Convert IDE enclosure to take a sata 3.5 HDD.

    Hi,

Not sure that this is the correct thread for this question ..... but here goes.

I have a 3.5inch Sata HDD which I would like to use, and assumed that I would require a Sata type enclosure in order to use it. I have an empty IDE enclosure and have heard it can be converted to take the Sata type external drive. So before going ahead and buying a new drive I am wondering if this is true as it may be a cheaper option.

    Any advice appreciated.

Gosh, IDE is so much slower than SATA that it would be like converting a reasonably fast HDD to a fairly slow USB flash drive. You can buy a cheapo 3.5" USB 3.0 drive enclosure for $17-25 bucks pretty easily (I see 4 in that price range on the first page of these Newegg Search results right now). My advice: buy a cheap USB 3.0 3.5" SATA drive enclosure. I've had good luck with Vantec NexStar and StarTech enclosures from Newegg myself.

Yep I suspected a Sata enclosure would be the way forward.

    Thanks for your reply.

Go for a SATA 3.5" HDD enclosure. I've bought these from Amazon UK for £7.

    Thanks for your reply Steve.

Have placed an order with Amazon for a SATA 3.5" HDD enclosure as you suggested.

    Using Axago RSI-X1 - Adapter | Alza.cz
for connecting SATA DVD drive to PATA mobo port... but it is suitable only for in-case placement
