Win10 won't switch automatically between speakers and headphones

After a forced upgrade by Windows 10 which I tried for months to avoid, windows updater has succeeded to sneak-in and install without my consent a new Win10 version.

As expected the system has been destabilized and the damages until now are:
    - When I plug in and out the headset the playback device doesn't switch automatically between speakers and headphones. I need to switch it manually every time.
    Help!

There's no such thing in my opinion as a forced upgrade, inasmuch as if you paid for Windows Home, you paid for updates to be delivered automatically. Were you to upgrade to Pro, you would have significantly more control, including setting updates to 'Notify' which means they can't be installed without the user allowing it.

You get what you pay for - but whether what MS offers Home users is appropriate given their record is another debate entirely.

You can stop all Windows updates: did you use this?
Stop Windows 10 Updates Properly and Completely

    I'm puzzled you say:
    a new Win10 version
yet you show your build is 1709. The latest, as you probably know, is 1803.

So I'm wondering if you've perhaps had an update of your audio driver - for some users that would be Realtek or similar- that's caused your problem.

Have you looked at Windows Update History (in Settings) to check you have indeed had a Windows update recently?

That would be a possibility if the driver was actually installed, hence why it showing as "high definition audio device" which means it is running on the Windows generic audio driver.

Gary you need to visit the Lenovo support page for your laptop and see if they have an updated audio driver for it for Windows 10. Failing that if they one for Windows 7, it should work.

I have win10 Pro. And certainly I didn't consent to any upgrade and made many efforts to stop this update (I did follow the steps mentioned, but to no avail). But Win10 was more persistent and start the update *without* my consent. It is obvious to me that this is a deliberate policy by MS.

"yet you show your build is 1709. The latest, as you probably know, is 1803."

Yes. I don't know why is that.

    No such update AFAIK.

But everything worked fine before the Win10 update. So I'm not sure it's about this. But I will try. Thanks.

Hi, as you have Pro, do you have updates set to Notify, and feature updates (upgrades) deferred?
Note that after the deferral period, you may then, of course, be offered the upgrade.

You say the problem arose following an update. Could you post a screenshot of your Update History - including any drivers (at the bottom - scroll down)?

And what is the date the audio driver was updated? (Device Manager).

Do any of these dates correlate with your problem?

And do you have a System Restore point created prior to this arising? (Not relevant if you received a build upgrade)

    - I don't know.

    - It's a huge list. I don't see any Audio driver update there.

And what is the date the audio driver was updated? (Device Manager).

    - 2017. Seems to be the latest one. See pics below.

Do any of these dates correlate with your problem?

    - No.

    - I did have a build upgrade.

Thanks Stormy! I went to Lenovo website, searched for my machine (was quite hard), and downloaded the only possible "new" audio driver to be updated (2015!). Installing and then rebooting my computer, it now works!

--- I'm quite frustrated by MS insistence on windows upgrades that really destabilizes one's system. This need to be solved somehow.

    - I did have a build upgrade.

    - If you had a build upgrade, your Update History would be reset. Assuming you claim the upgrade was recent, the two don't seem to fit.

As you are upset that you have had an unexpected update or upgrade, I'll just remind you about Notify and Deferral.
These can be set using the Group Policy Editor; for that you can follow the appropriate Tutorials.
Or you can use Winaero's Tweaker to set updates to Notify.
Or you can use Windows Update Minitool. (Both free).
